Was out quading Sunday

Post by Sassy »

Probably a thread here somewhere never looked.
Had a blast, got filthy, stuck, just about drowned and my old 350fourtrax never missed a beat.
Good friend good times!

This was quite a few years ago - I misjudged where the sand bar was located underneath the ice, and as soon as I heard the cracking and felt the back end break through, I knew I had made a critical error. :)

I agree! I've had a couple instances when things could've gone wrong.
Around here we have incredible quading. With the selective logging in some areas it creates really neat and challenging rides. Plus there are still some trails left from early 1900s that wind along creeks etc in the newer growth. Then every so often you pop out of the trees to something like this.

I may have posted this pic before but you get the idea.

By the time I got the quad out of the water, I had long since lost feeling in my feet. After riding it home, my pants had frozen solid, and I had to stand next to the fire to warm them up so I could remove them.

That kind of cold can be deadly!
Almost lost a friend and his daughter. His daughter went through the stream ice while sleding. By the time he got her and her sled to shore and raced at -30° to a near by ice fishing shack they saw with smoke out the chimney. All they're clothes were like your pants,,, minutes later, they'd been gone.

I've been cold like that, when I fell off a boat into water that was not long after ice had broken up. Hypothermia just sucks all your strength, I couldn't pull myself back into the boat! And I was 17 at the time.

In this case, I was barely in to my waist, so my core wasn't in the water, and not for long, as I would climb out each time I broke through the ice.
