Towing Insurance...

Post by Big Bob »

Well after 18 years of almost being a lifetime member of GWRRA, the closing of the organization is now presenting my newest problem...towing insurance. Have used the towbuster insurance twice and zero complaints. Now I need to find something else...what are others using? Comments good or bad. I'm thinking about Good Sams, looks and sound good...but...comments count! Let me know!!! Thanks!

My Progressive policy includes towing as well as trip interruption coverage. The one time I had it use the towing, it was good, and well worth it.

Towing is included in my Foremost Ins policy (recreational vehicle division of Farmers Ins.). Premium $125 covering both my bikes. But I have never used it. I could say that I ride a Goldwing... never expect it to break down! In fact it has always gotten me home, but that's only been 4 yrs now. I don't take long touring trips, and I have my own trailer rigged for bike transport. But things can happen, so I made sure the policy included towing.

I to had to get towing insurance after GWRRA shut down. Checked with my bike insurance and got towing added to my policy for $7.00 per year. I have Geico insurance on my 2004 GL1800 Roadsmith trike.

I’ve been pondering this same thing since the GWRRA announcement. My findings:
AAA RV Plus is the best, if you’re in their coverage area. 100 mile towing radius, 10 calls a year. I am outside their coverage area.
My motorcycle insurance (Progressive) has a road side towing service, but it’s limited to 15 miles. Not helpful. Every other insurance company is about the same, maybe a few more miles but that’s not a large radius.

I ended up becoming a member of AMA again (they’re a little too political at inappropriate times for my liking, I cancelled my membership in 2020) because for $49 a year, their roadside is free if you sign up for multiple years, or one year with auto-renew feature. Towing radius is, again, pathetic at 35 miles but the number of calls is unlimited. I used the roadside to tow my Wing to Honda last month with no issues…except that I didn’t specify I needed a flatbed and not a wrecker.

If you’re in the 49 states that AAA RV Plus covers, go with them. I had that for years without issue. I got my 1100 towed from Indiana to Wisconsin without issue (despite it pulling my trailer). I am reading low that some of the AAA areas have 200 mile towing for the premium membership. Great for if you’re in the middle of nowhere.

Just my 2¢.

I had Roadside Rescue, so just added the roadside assistance coverage to my Progressive account.
Cost me $1.64 (every 6 months) to do so.

I seem to remember calling in tows for Progressive customers on Windward O'ahu, beyond their mainland-policy stated distance. You might check with them and see what they do on Big Island.

Whenever an insurance carrier seems to be falling short, ask them if there is a way to improve the situation. They would really rather get your money than watch it go to the next company on the list.

I subscribed to "Good Sam". It seemed to be the best coverage and value. Plus I own an rv.

Oh yeah Progressive would, but what if the destination is more than 15 miles away? It’s AAA RV Plus that doesn’t cover Hawaii.

Motorcycle towing

Does the AMA still offer towing assistance? I remember using it years ago., but haven't been there for quite a while.

Well I'm not the fastest person to make a decision, but considering everything else going on....I moved quick enough. I signed up for 2 years of the Platinum program at $109.00 with Good Sams. Seems to be pretty good coverage for a good deal. Hopefully won't ever need it, but we have towing insurance for everything we own, and anyone we ride with, I like that!!
