First Goldwing (GL1200) in Cleveland Ohio

Post by Jonaugie »

Hello All,

I just wanted to introduce myself. I have been a heavy user of the forum since I picked up my first Goldwing last month: 1986 GL1200A.

I “Accidentally” restored this beauty over the past few weeks. Love this thing! Now I just need a 1500 and an 1800 to round out the collection…

Thanks for the help!
-Jon

Nice looking bike. How do you "accidentally" restore a bike?

Haha, I was waiting for someone to ask me this!

I purchased the bike for ~$1,500 and it was in (seemingly) rough cosmetic condition, so I had every intention of just changing the tires and riding it as is until it was ready to be ridden to the junk yard. However, the engine ran insanely well since the prior owner had the carbs professionally rebuilt, synched, and tuned. And this was my first GW, so I didn't realize how well they rode!

Given all of this, when I took the wheels off for new tires, I just kept going and rebuilt nearly everything and performed all maintenance as well as deep cleaning every component. In the end, after over 60 hours of work and $1,500 in parts I have an amazing biked that I didn't intend on having!

You certainly have a nice bike that will last for many years. A great accomplishment!
I think the honda engineers did a super job making this bike easy to work on.
