How many GL1500's were made?

Post by Sadanorakman »

Does anyone know exactly how many GL1500's were made in total during the model's manufacturing lifespan from 1988 to 2000?

Additionally, was every single GL1500 made in Ohio, or were any (other than prototypes) made in Japan or elsewhere?

I did read that no more than 1520 SE's were made in any year for each model-market, but don't know if that's true?

The 1500s were all made in the USA, motor and chassis. Made a point of this with my HD riding friends every chance I could. Don't know how many were made. The 1800s were manufactured there as well up to 2010 (?). 1200s were frame up with the engine from Japan. My '85 Limited Edition was made there with an engine from Japan.

Honda started manufacturing the Gold Wing in Marysville, Ohio in 1979. The engine plant, just down the road from the HAM plant (Honda of America Manufacturing) was specifically designed to manufacture 1500 engines, but shared the manufacturing capability with its automotive counterparts.

The history of the Marysville plant is an interesting read.

As far as I know, ALL Goldwings were made in Ohio beginning in September of 1979, and running through the end of 2010. There was no such thing as a 2011 Goldwing, since the manufacturing machinery was being moved back to Japan during 2011.
During that time period, if you lived elsewhere in the world, like Japan for instance, you had to import your Goldwing from the USA.
So, 30 years of Goldwings were one hundred percent American made.
George in Jersey.

Honda doesn't release detailed production figures. However, if you do the math, it's about 130,000 as they averaged 10,000 units per year.

Well my 2000 SE carries a serial number just above 300,000. Not sure if those serials are for all Wings, all Wings built in the US factory, or just gl1500's.
I read that they produced more 1500's than all of the previous 1000's, 1100's, and 1200's combined.

Maybe I should go and uncover my 1991 SE and see what serial that carries; that may shed some light on the matter.

Would love to know how close my 2000 was to the end of 1500 production.
