LED Headlight dimmer

Post by dtrider »

Hello all. A few years ago I replaced the Halogen low-beam headlights on my 2012 Goldwing with Pathfinder LED headlights. At the time I found that they were extremely bright, to the point where it would be uncomfortable for drivers if I pulled up behind them at night. Well at least they were very noticeable during the day time, and I didn't ride at night very often.

I've now started working for a Motorcycle Escort service where I have to run with red/white flashing lights during funeral escorts. I'm now being told that the red/white LEDs in front are being overpowered by the LED headlights and they can't really be seen beyond about 200 feet. Not really a good situation when I'm coming at on-coming traffic to get to the next intersection before the procession. As I see it, I have a couple of options: go back to the Halogen lights (except that I will have to get a replacement headlight socket since the Pathfinder doesn't use the socket and I must have discarded the old one), or install a switch to turn off the headlights when I'm running the red/whites.

What I would prefer though would be to have a PWM dimmer so that I could adjust the intensity of the LED headlights as needed. That way I could run with lower intensity when the red/whites are running or when I pull up behind somebody, and run full intensity when I need the visibility. Does anybody know if such a device exists?

Thanks

Those must be an older version. Have you tried the manual adjustment to bring the beam down? What are you running for emergency lights and where are they mounted?

Yes, I have the beam angle on the bike set to the lowest that it will go. The lights are Damega 6 element grill lights: https://ledoutfitters.com/surface-mount ... lle-light/
I have the front-facing lights mounted on brackets under the mirrors. I would have thought that would have set them far enough away from the headlights to not be overpowered, but apparently not.

You can find PWM dimmers on Amazon. However, it will depend on what kind of driver is in the headlights if they can be dimmed that way.
