Do you recall the first time you saw a Goldwing in person??

Post by dawgout81 »

I was thinking back, back, back in both my memory and time to the first time I recall seeing a Goldwing in person.

It was maybe '75 or '76 (not sure) but it was at a small Honda dealership in Watertown, WI called Freedom Wheels.

I was a poor college student at the time and could only stand and dream and drool.

It was a real game changer type bike,,,big, 1000 cc's were pretty much unheard of at the time, smooth, water cooled. That particular model was a yellow one.

I sure do. It was an almost brand-new 1983 Aspencade, belonging to my uncle, towed in on a trailer to a family reunion - he was riding it down, but had a tire blow on him, and he went down. I remember he was limping a bit, but otherwise unharmed. The bike had some scrapes and bashes, but he got it fixed up quickly after that.

1976, Bernardi's Honda on the corner of Speen Street and Route #9 in Natick Ma. At that time I was riding a 73 Honda 750F I purchased when I got out of the service and went there with a buddy of mine to buy tires for his bike. Came away very impressed but owning one at that time was just a dream. Now I have 4 of them :D

Yes sir, saw it in september 1974. Didnt think much of it then. When the first interstate with hondaline fairing and bags and trunk. I knew I have to have one sooner or later. I rode other brands till I saved enough penneys. I never looked back.

Yep, I remember the first time I saw one and recognized it for what it was,

It was September 2010, and my buddy got one... traded in his Harley on it. It was gorgeous, black, all decked out with chrome and lights. He got a 2007 that somebody else had loved the heck out of, then sold to him. Prior to that, I hadn't even looked at Goldwings, did not see them if they went by, being a lifetime Harley rider, but I was having problems with tendonitis in my back and the vibration of the Harley was killing me. So, 01 October, 2010, I bought my very own Goldwing, and now there are so many out there that I cannot believe I did not see them before, and Harleys are annoyingly loud ..... but that is the way life is sometimes -

On an amusing aside note: I received a 25 year patch from H.O.G. last month. They have marvelous map books, so I don't think I will tell them I have the Goldwing,
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

I remember it was about 1976 and I got to be buddies with a friend that is a honda salesmen and we spent many
a night out drinking good beer. One evening we got to talking cycles, and he said lets go over to his shop to
show me the new Goldwing. The bike was in the show room, close to the front door and he started it up.

Next he took out a nickel or was it a quarter, that part I for got. He said watch this, and proceeded to put
that quarter on the fuel pump on edge.Yes, thats right, on EDGE! The bike was idling, and that quarter stayed right there on edge......I could not beleive my eyes! :o :o

We drove many a mile over the years on the 750 I bought from him and never had one brake down.I can't say that for a lot of friends that drove with us driving H/D..s

Wow that brought back a memory, Anderson Honda in Michigan was where I bought my first new Honda that was the 69 350 Scrambler, paid $708.00 for it. Actually my brother made the purchase for me, I was stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Ranger and in the home port of Alameda, California. I told him to purchase it for me and get the shipping crate it came in also, then later had him ship it to me in California I rode that bike all over sunny Cal. When I was discharged I made a bike rack for the front of my pickup camper (that I drove out to California) out of aluminum channel and brought that bike home to Michigan. Still have the 350 and the bike rack I made, not the camper tho! I wish I still had that truck now, it was a 1969 crewcab Dodge pickup.

I'm old enough to remember the first Goldwing Honda came out with here in the States, and I thought they were just awesome. But my first time seeing a GL-1800 was at the Sturgis Rally in August of 2001. Rode up in the cage from Arizona and went to the rally with my Son-in-Law. As we were walking down Main Street I saw a brand-spanking new Yellow 2001 Wing. Instantly fell in love and went back to Scottsdale and got me a brand new 2002 Stream Silver Metallic Goldwing. Loved that bike and rue the day I sold it. I know, I know...."what if?" Oh well, water under the bridge and I'm looking at the 2012s now. We'll see how it goes. ;)

I believe it was in 1983 at the Food World parking lot in Fayetteville, NC. My manager, Vaden Earl, pulled up in an 83 Aspencade. It had everbody salivating including myself as I was putting around in a Kawa 440LTD. It only took 20 some odd years for me to wise up and get one myself. Now I'm tickled pink :D

It was 1975, my buddy and I had been getting the brochures in the base exchange for some time. We were both riding new 1974 CB750k2's. I got orders back to the states and sold the 750 before leaving. I went to all the dealers from San Diego to North LA and all told me the same thing>>>>it would be a few months before they had them available for sale. One dealer in San Diego was running a contest with KCBQ radio station to give away a new Goldwing...It was beautiful, custom painted in purple with sunbursts and stars airbrushed all over the tank and side covers. Had gold leafing down the center of the false tank.

I went back to the dealer the day of the drawing...it was all a hoax setup...where some bigwig car dealer from Phoenix had the winning ticket....Well after all the rah rah on the radio, the "winner" and the dealership owner or manager whichever were by the office talking...I walked up and said, "don't care what kind of games you are playing with the contest, but I want that bike...HOW MUCH" They looked at each other then at me and said "are you serious?". I said yes and the manager said just a minute. He walked into the office and came back out after about 2 minutes and said how about $2,250 out the door. I left him a check for $500 and said I would be back within an hour with the full amount. I left, went to the bank and came back with cash and paid him. I then took the bike to another shop I knew and spent more than that for bags, tote box, floor boards, ride off center stand, radio console and radio, with CB, vetter fairing, air horn and probably a couple other things I can't remember now. Most had to have bracket modified from the CB750 mounting for the wing as nothing was on the market for the wing. Hell the wing wasn't even on the market yet. Kept the bike in great condition until 87 when in the middle of a divorce, it came up stolen while I was out of town...I'm sure the x-wife had a lot in helping that happen. Sure miss that bike...Did without a wing until 2008 when I bought and 84 Aspencade., then last June got a 98 Aspencade.

Yeah. Probably 1975. I just bought a new 1975 750SS and my friend Paul the gunsmith just bought a new GW 1000. In a first gear "roll on" I could stay even with the GW until about 70 mph, and then the Wing would slowly pull away. No replacement for displacement. Both bikes would turn high 12s in a quarter if you were good.

as a kid, I rode a lot of stuff, Cushman scooters, "Mustang" motorcycle ( 12 inch wheels )
then in 1971 we bought two Yamaha enduros, a 175cc and a 250cc....

rode those things hard, and they never failed us....
then I got stupid and started jumping over hilltops w/o looking on the backside to see what is there.

one day, the backside had a lot of little rivelets, made by rainstorms.....
while up in the air at 80 mph, I told God " god, if you let me live through this, I will sell this bike tomorrow, I have two kids 2 and 3 years old that need me"

30 plus years later, my son volunteers for Iraq as a civilian motor pool mechanic....
he had a '84 Goldwing and brought it over told me to ride it everyday, because if it just sits, the carbs will gunk up and be useless.....

so, I started riding it to work and back, realized that I really like this couch on wheels....
I later traded his '84 for a '94SE and fell in love with another Road Sofa.....
then Penske came along and ended my riding days for 3 years..... I find a '98SE in Tampa, FL and road that home to Phoenix, AZ.

later sold that, and bought a 2002 1800 and it is still with me.

It was some time in 1976 in Fort Walton Beach, FL on Eglin AFB in front of the 33rd TFW Weapons Release shop, when my shift Sgt., Wendell Dudley rode his brand new red GL1000 to work and everyone gathered around to admire it. I could not believe what I was seeing.

I was born in November of 1974 ..... My dad bought a brand new 1977 Goldwing GL1000. He rigged up a harness and took me with him riding by the time I was 3. So, in short. I don't remember a time in my life when I HADN'T seen a Goldwing. Being 45 now I own that very same (it is in storage after a 2.5 year factory perfect restoration) GL1000, a 1980 GL1100 (just about the most perfect daily rider I've ever had), an '87 Interstate which is great for long hauls with the Mrs and I owned a 2004 GL1800 for a brief time (unfortunately the victim of a minivan driving soccer mom not paying attention). The only series I haven't owned is the GL1500 and frankly the only model in that series that I would be interested in would be a Valkyrie. I guess you could say I was born to the Goldwing tradition.

Make no mistake I have had other bikes, but there is always reserved space in my garage for a 'Wing.

I probably saw one earlier, but the first time that I can remember seeing one in person was in early 1991. It was in Al's Honda/Yamaha in South Hutchinson, KS. I was shocked by the price tags of around $10,000. I don't remember if those were new or used, but I do remember the price seemed incredibly high. I thought those were the most beautiful motorcycles that I'd ever seen. To this day, I still think that the GL1500 is the best looking Goldwing. Unless I find a GL1500 for a steal, I'll probably skip right from my Gl1100 to a GL1800 just for the EFI.

My uncle had one in probably the early 80’s when I was a teenager. I just remember it looking really BIG! It was gold I think?
