GL1500 Forks/wheel/tire on a GL1200?? YES you can!

Post by oldmopars »

So, in an effort to improve the GL1200 I am building, I decided that I wanted the larger GL1500 front wheel/tire combo. Much better selection of ADV style tires for the larger sizes. I am building this bike into an ADV/Scrambler bike. Scramblers have low bars and no bags, so this will be more ADV style with proper off road bars and some decent saddle bags.
I started by stripping the 1200 down to a naked bike. Then I decided to install the 1500 front and rear wheel/tire combo. This has been done before in the rear, so go read that right up. But I saw nothing about swapping the front.
So, as it turns out this is a no mod bolt on swap, super easy. The fork tubes are the same size, same length, the axle is center line of the fork tubes on both, and the center to center at the triple clamps is the same. Even the brakes are set up the same with the linked set up.
So, this swap over took me an afternoon. Now, I still need to go through the forks and rebuild/reseal them, but this was just to see it it would work. You will also notice that I also swapped out the handlebars to ones from a 2015 CB500X, they will get risers soon.

Interesting

Larger diameter front disc of 1500 front end will also make for improved braking, doing both ends will help a 1200s braking with load and ridden two up. Sure would have some scratching heads at the next chapter ride.

Can see someone (no, not me, like my trike's Cobra Trike Front Radial) doing a reverse swap of 1200 front onto a 1500 based Trike to get a 16" front wheel now.

I keep moving forwards on this project, but it is slow. I did get the rear shocks swapped out and some lights temp mounted so I can do a test drive. I hope to get it out very soon ad see how she feels.
Once I know all the mechanicals are going to be good, I will start working to make it look good.
