Installing a new starter on a 1975 GL1000

Post by Gdonlo04 »

the Clymer Book instructs you to disconnect the power cable and remove the two 10 mm bolts and the starter will come right off. installation is reversed. WELL, let me tell you the truth. Yes, you can get the starter our of the engine but you cant get it off the bike. due to the shape of the starter and the very tight space it will not come past the frame. the exhaust bolts are in the way and so is the frame itself. I had to remove the frame arm nuts, the engine bolt and pull off the left side frame arm to give myself enough space to get the starter off the bike. installation is the reverse of that. You tube did not have any info so i am sharing my experience .

remove the rear exhaust stud. Then the starter will come out. Use genuine Honda nuts, they will not strip, aftermarket nuts appear to be softer and strip.

i concur as of this afternoon!
Wound up pulling spare 79 starter apart, cleaned, inspected brushes (in spec), reassembled, everything turned over clean and on command. Have yet to run it up to temps, shut off let engine heat soak and attempt to start to verify "hot start stall" has been remedied. If not then next item to inspect/replace will be starter solenoid. Was NOT able to remove starter without without dropping exhaust, pulling shift lever and side lower frame section. Tilted to the side supported by ratchet strats to heavy steel work benches and floor jack under engine. Made it a BREEZE to remove and install, no fiddling with trying to angle just to restab gear but be warned oil will run out of your crankcase when pulling starter off initially.

UPDATE: hot start stall is gone! Spins engine over effortlessly at any temp, plus i does help to have everything in tune. Starts on first roll every time regardless of heat soak just as if it were cold, So Cal cold 76 deg lol. Clean out, polish everything, inspect, reassemble and vuala like new for another 53k miles!
