I bought my Wing with about 35,000 miles on it, so I wanted to change all the fluids to ensure I would have reliability. I flushed the differential until the dark gear oil was all gone, then refilled it with Synthetic Lucas Oil. I used Amsoil for the engine. The Lucas gear oil is clear and thick. I noticed a difference immediately! I used to hear a high pitch whine when coasting down mountain roads in gears 3 and 4. That sound is completely gone after the oil change. The synthetic oils are much better than anything that existed when the bike was built. I put another 10K on the odometer and rechecked the differential oil. It was just as clear as when I put it in. I changed it anyway, since it only takes a coffee cup full and I was already there. I am planning to flush brake fluid next.

During the winter, I decided to check and replace the cruise element filter. I had done the small filter on other side a couple winters ago. Got to the canister and popped off. Filter was a bit rough so took it out. Ordered new filter and put it in and put it back together. A few weeks ago out on a ride, I put on cruise and it jumped and cussed and up and down speed, so disengaged cruise. Tried it again on another open spot of road and it did the same thing. Decided to strip it down again and recheck my work. Took canister off and the filter seemed right, but a little far down past the slot on top. Went to this page on goldwingdocs forum and looked at pic on this page of canister to see where filter sits in canister. Noticed filter came to top and to outside edge of bottom end. So pulled it out and stretched it out a bit and put back in. This time it came to top of of canister and to end of bottom end. Snapped it back into place. I had never touched anything else but the canister. And by the way, everything has worked perfectly all these yrs and last season with old filter in. No glitches in cruise. Tried again today and still jumpy. Speeds up and slows down. I might be taking it apart again. Bike runs like a champ otherwise. No hesitation or glitches at all on throttle. Anything I did wrong or could look for. Someone had mentions vacuum hoses, but never touched them and the hoses going to element box are all good.

The filter should make no difference in the overall operation of the cruise control. The old filter was rough shape, but cruise was working great last season and I was careful taking it apart. Cleaned out the canister good before inserting new one. I have been doing a lot of research on this issue. Reading everything I can find on this forum and others. One thing I have read about and didn't realize might affect the operation of cruise is the speedo. I do have a twitch in my needle while moving along. But I remember a bit of twitch in it last season but no issue with cruise. Maybe new filter brought out the issue I never noticed before. Going to dig into this further tomorrow since our riding weather is going south for a few days. In a video from goldwingdocs forum there was 3 issues one being the fluctuation of speed while on cruise like mine. I will pull cable and grease it and see. The cruise control unit uses engine rpm input mainly to maintain the speed set, and the speedo signal as a secondary source. So this may explain your situation.

Took the speedo cable out using video from this page viewtopic.php?t=21167. The guy said if cable is gummy or dirty it would make the speedo needle waggle which in turn would cause cruise to be intermittent and choppy. So pulled cable out and it didn't come out very easy because as I found out, it was covered in chunky old lub. So it wasn't spinning right. Coiled it up in a plastic lid and soaked it with brake cleaner spray. Wiped it all down and hung it for a few mins and greased it up good with my good high speed grease. Slid it back up line which was much easier than getting it out. Hooked everything back up and back together and took her for a ride. Well all be. No waggle in speedo needle and cruise working as smooth as it always did. That was a simple fix thanks to goldwingdocs forum and all the info I find here. Didn't have to take side fairing cover off again to check filter. Thanks so much to goldwingdocs.

Well got mine done today, and boy did they need it.
82,500 miles on the bike and don't know if they have ever been changed in the past 25 years.
The cruise one was bad, it was slightly crumbly on the ends and had no "springiness" to it when compressed. The subfilter was total trash. When I pulled it apart, it was cracked and falling apart. When I went to pull it out, it just crumbled. If I pushed on it, it turned into dust. I think it was due for a change.
I will tell you what though, for 2 little filters, there is a lot to take apart to get to them.
I was actually taking the left side plastics off to run cables for a 2 camera "dash cam" install, so I just did it as part of the install (was not planning on removing the right side plastic, but was not that much more to do since I had the front and left side off). It also gave me a chance to replace the bulbs in the side marked lights. Both were burned out.

When I took mine out the sub air filter was just like the one pictured. It turned to dust when touched. The cruise filter wasn't too bad but it got changed anyway.

I will be tackling this soon once my filters come in. I ride dirtbikes so I have "filter oil" hopefully it doesn't degrade as bad. I have seen old farm bikes with air filters degraded like the sub filter picks but never had it happen to a bike that I was maintaining. Hope it makes a difference at least keep it down to once every second year.

hello everyone
im changing my filters on my 89 GL 1500, but my question is,
i am also putting Revco horns on my bike just like my 95. without takin everything apart on the 95, where did you put the motor on the bike like in the picture? i have looked everywhere that i came put it but cant find a location. my 95 hose goes down behind the light somewhere. it would take 1 1/2 to take everything apart to find where the motor is.
