Fuel starvation 1997 1500

Post by Gerrywing »

My 1997 1500 SE runs out of fuel when I'm going hard . It usually only lasts about 8 painful seconds, while the vehicles you just passed rushes up behind you.
I've changed my fuel filter checked my fuel pump, cleaned my fuel cap. I'm assuming rebuilding my carbs is next. Is this a project a home handy man should take on. I didn't find a DIY article.
The bike runs like a charm otherwise.

Not likely a carb issue. Did you check volume and pressure of the fuel pump per the manual?
The vacuum petcock can also be an issue. A rebuild kit is available for it.

Just forward of the fuel cap next to the fuel filter.

Thank you. I will try and get a rebuild kit today from my local Honda dealer.

I believe the dealer will only sell you a complete valve.
Cyclemax and Randakk's among others will have them.

Did you test it?
You can also temporarily bypass it as a way to verify that it is your problem.

I'll order a rebuild kit because this bike sat for so many years. In the mean time I'll try a bypass.
Do you know if I can take just the fuel pump into a shop and have it tested or should I take the whole bike. I've always felt it was probably the fuel pump.
Thanks so much

There is a volume and pressure test in the service manual for the fuel pump. Pressure is around 2 psi, and volume is 640cc per minute.

I did the bypass trick today. Went out on the highway cranked her wide open excelerated to 180, no fuel starvation.
That's kilometers per hour.
Sweet thanks again
