tire age

Post by hondo »

HELLO: Love this site. Have used it extensively while readying a 81 goldwing for the road. Am almost there. Synced the carbs yesterday and rode it for a short spell for the first time it has been even running for ten years. Still have to do the drive train and rear wheel bearings as well as new tires. The rest has come on good and I wouldn't have been able to do it so easily without access to all the info on this site. I know I have seen it here before but don't know where to find it, so if someone could let me know HOW TO TELL THE AGE OF TIRES I would greatly appreciate it. It seems to me there is a code on the sidewall of the tire and if you know how to read it you can tell how old it is. I am going to look at an 82 silverwing 500 for my grandson. If all goes well we are going to take a trip up to northwestern British Columbia. To the Terrace Kitimat area where I grew up. Enough of this babble, please help. Thanks again for all the good info on this site. I just wish I could remember where it all is. hondo

Hondo would you please update your location in your profile, we never know if you are a neigbor on this site if you leave your city/town out of it.
If you are traveling through my area on your way north, give me a shout and maybe we can meet up or I could give you a place to stay on the way through. 8-)

RoadRogue: Sorry if the info is skimpy but as I am a joke around computers and like I don't know how to do what you ask. Will ask my son to give me a hand next time he is over. Thanks for your offer and if I get up that way I will be sure to look you up. I make my home in Surrey now and looks like it might be for the duration. It puts me close to my kids and grand kids. Talk to you again. honda jhb1@telus.net

My general rule of thumb is if I have to ask about the age of the tire I replace it. Heavy bikes and bad tires don't mix. Age is only one of the factors also, the condition of the tire is directly related to the environment that it has been used/stored in.
