oil ??

Post by bubbzy93 »

Okayyy ....
I know there is a lot of controversy over this subject ... but i'm gonna ask anyways.
The guy I bought my wing from has always used amsoil synthetic oil it .... I just see this as a huge expense when the manual says a good quality 10w40 oil will do ... such as penzoil. I know a lot of people think oil is oil .... but I also know there ARE differences. Where most of my concerns lie are the clutches, I use 10w40 penzoil in my 98 Honda Shadow areo with no problems at all. I'm thinking that it would be fine in my wing too .... I would like to hear what people think, but do not want to start arguments ..... :geek:

I use Shell Rotella T 15-40 in bike. When I bought bike clutch would slip on ocasion & previous owner used regular Castrol 10-40 in bike. When I switched to Rotella T problem went away after about 200 miles & clutch hasent slipped sence. I could also tell a differance in how smooth engine ran & shifted. I'm sold on this oil in my wing. My 2 cents!

Mobile 1 T for motorcycles w/wet clutches.
My Wing is not a diesel so, I don't run diesel oil in it!
My Wing does not call for 5W** nor **W50.
Run what meets the specs in your owners manual, dino or synthetic.

If he used Amsoil in your bike, you're a lucky man.

I have used AmsOil on both GL1800's (2001 & 2009 and over 70K miles) I have owned. The only thing I did find out was in 2009 and newer GL1800's the oil specifications changed from 10W40 to 10W30. The reason for the change is the starter can fail to engage the engine, at temps of 50 deg F. or lower, with the 10W40 oil. That happened to me and a few others with newer GL1800's. You can get away with the 10W40 in higher temperature climates.
I also found that the cost of Honda GN4 at my local Honda dealer, is almost as much as the AmsOil full synthetic oil. The Honda full synthetic is 30% to 40% more than AmsOil.
The full synthetic oils can go longer than the "Dino" oils. But you still want to follow, no less than, the Honda specs for time or mileage between changes. Some change oil and filter at 2K or 3K mileage but that is a waste of money. You can go a lot longer with the synthetic oils. I usually go between 5K & 6K and change the oil at the end of the riding season before putting into storage. That means I change oil two to four times a year.

I have been using the full synthetic Shell Rotella (walmart $26) S6 for 3 seasons. Fresh oil at the end of the season and run 8K miles or so a summer and it runs great !

I like Delo engine oil in my wing, mobil 1 in my car and castrol in my wife's car. My old oil drinking pickup...the cheapest thing the auto parts store has or reclaimed oil from one of the newer cars.

For that its worth....STOP looking at the $$$$$ figures all the time. So Amsoil will cost you and little more...so what..! I bet you only do a oil change once a year...right? I do about 2 to 3 per year as I tended to ride alot. Even if you do 2 oil changes per year, is the extra way $20 going to kill you...? I bet you spend hundreds of $$$$ on chrome and other toys for your bike that does Jack S#!t for making your engine run better, last longer and so on.

Myself, I bought my bike new and I ran the OEM oil that it came with from the factory till it was time for its first change. After that its been Amsoil ever since. Don't be cheap...get the good stuff. Its only a few bucks more per year then the cheap stuff.

Blows my mind really how some will cry and whine about spending $10 more for oil....but will not give a second thought to dropping $500 to a few $1,000 on toys and chrome toys for there bikes al most every year.

These engines will last 200000 miles whether you use regular dino or synthetic, I've tried synthetic but my Wing is quieter and shifts a little smoother with Delo 400, Rotella and Castrol 4T non synthetic. That's why I stopped using Synthetic and do not use premium gas, but that's a different thread.

Right now because I ran out of my beloved Amsoil...I have DELO 400 15W40 in my bike as I really needed a oil change after doing some 15,000 Km's on it in the worst of conditions. I was up north....why up north Que "
