Has it got a pipe leading from the tank switch? If so, disconnect that and drain the tank.

An alternative would be to give it dose of Seafoam and ride the tank out, then repeat with a fresh load of fuel each time.

How long has the bike been sitting with this old gas in the tank? Worst case is you could siphon out the bulk of the old gas top it off with a healthy dose of Seafoam (say the whole can) and fresh gas. Make sure there is no rust in the tank, change out the fuel filter. The Seafoam will remove the built up varnish fairly quickly 8-)

The title is a bit confusing, is it a GW 1800 or is it a vtx 1800?

FYI....All of the facts are needed at the start of a thread if you want clear direction.

Seafoam may not clean your 5 year setting carbs.
You can get it at autoparts store or Walmart.
You most likely will have to take them totally apart and boil clean them.

The vtx 1800 is Fuel injected, has throttle body and injectors not carbs. Can you see inside the throttle bodies to see if the injectors are passing anything? If yes then keep dose-ing the fuel line with seafoam and let it sit for a few hrs, then try to crank it to life to move the seafoam through the system. let it sit again and repeat. The Seafoam will loosen and dissolve the crud in the lines, when you crank it should move along the line. you may have to remove the injectors and clean them out (probably will have to) .Seafoam is good but there is only so much it can do on its own.Others will be along with other ideas to get you going. 8-)

To take the tank off you need to remove the seat then theres a bolt through the back bottom edge of the tank. Once thats removed you need to scoot the tank back and remove the rubber bushings from the front just behind the triple tree. Then you slide the tank back up onto the stubs that stick out and carefully raise the tank. You will need a rod of some sort, a dowel is what I used to prop up the back of the tank. Then under the tank is a vent tube and a line with a clamp on it that need to come off. Then an electrical connector then the banjo fitting. You might want to have a wad of rags handy for the spillage. Once the line is empty no more fuel will come out. I had an 02 VTX for ten yearas and had the tank off MANY times. The repair manual is priceless. Try this site.>>>>>>>>>http://www.vtxoa.com/forums/index.php<<<<<<<<<

I thought so, but he said both in the first post. I haven't been around the vtx to do anything on them and know for sure.

When in doubt, (carbs or injectors), just use the Seafoam ! (amazing stuff)!! Wish I'd have invented it, might be able to own a NEW
motorcycle, ha, ha!! good luck, friend.
