another wing problem

Post by s10hornet »

As a little background. I bought this motor out of an 83 wing. All I knew was the owner had exchanged the bike as payment for some auto work. Bike was not running at the time. The owner had installed a radio, cb radio, and a couple of power outlets along with some extra lights.

I now have the motor in my 82 wing. Rebuilt the carbs(& synched), new timing belts, new battery, rebuilt the starter.
Had a problem with the clutch sticking but that is now resolved thanks to some good advice from this forum.
The bike is running good. I have only put about 70 miles on the bike since all the work was completed.

So this morning I decide to ride to work. Bike started and ran fine. I still need to adjust the idle(it's idling low) but was waiting until I had run a tank of gas through it with Seafoam added. I get to a traffic light and stop. Idle drops down to about 750, when I feathered the throttle to bring it up the bike died. Hit the start button and nothing.

Get the bike home and put a meter on the battery, 12.05 volts. Turn on the ignition and hit the start button only 6.5 volts to the starter.
I'm thinking that the stator is bad. Any advice?

It does sound a bit low.youll have to charge the battery and start the bike to be able to trouble shoot. The charging system should bring the battery over 13 volts easily above 1500 rpm.
Don't assume the stator is bad untill its been tested.

A bad battery will do the same thing. I would charge the battery and have it load tested but if it`s an old one then just replace it with a big crank or other quality battery.
sounds like a battery, I doubt your starter just up and failed(but they can)..Doubt it is the stator but check your connectors between the stator and regulator while your in there.

thanks for the responses.
The battery is new. Just put in two weeks ago when I had a starter problem. At that time the bike wouldn't start. Took the starter off and the brushes were fried. Had another starter so I rebuilt it and solved the problem.

How do I test the stator?

Here's a post for that....There's plenty of info in the "Search" section on the stator, not charging,regulator/rectifier,charging system repairs and soldering....etc.

Post if you get lost or at least with what you find....all info is helpful.

I had something similar happen and what cured it has me baffled to this day. I put in a new battery and the bike ran for a week perfectly. Then it went dead....WTF?????? I tested everything. My buddy who has been riding Wings a LONG time came over, loosened the positive baterry cable and retightened it and the thing ran perfect for the life of that battery. Wings are touchy.
