speedometer gearbox

Post by hotwire »

Greetings, wingers, anyone ever had problems with the front wheel speedo gearbox? I think that's my problem, as my display started going wacky all over the place, then just quit. Got a lot of play in the little shaft back and forth when I took out the sensor to see if it was just dirty. Got any suggestions, 'cause I've been known to bark up the wrong tree from time to time, Ha, Ha! Could be a lot of trouble to take the front wheel off and apart to disassemble that gearbox. Don't even know if ya can get parts for the thing.??

I had a similar problem with my 82 1100, jacked up the front end, spun the wheel and the flat metal tab seemed to turn ok. Tried lubing the cable, replaced the cable. Nothing seemed to help, finally tried spraying some silicone spray into the speedo where the cable screws on, that worked for a couple of weeks, so I sprayed it again and over did it, the insides got too slippery and the needle quit going up with the speed, ended up getting a new speedo off ebay, worked great. Got a new bike out of the deal with 0 miles. Good luck with yours.
