What type and brand of helmet do you have.
I bought new Nolan helmets with their com system. After some initial problems I am very happy with them now.
In the communication world it's the ol' you get what you pay for. Edsets and J&M are good brands and there are others.

I use a J+M headset, it works well enough but I wanted better sound from the speakers so I grafted in some from a set of stereo headphones. Better speakers means better sounding music, Like Nick said, you get what you pay for.
