Need help ASAP

Post by zeusmann »

My buddies GF backed into the front of my 83 wing and skidded it back about 10 inches but it didn't fall over. The bike was in 1st gear.

Now when I try to start it up it barely cranks without jumpers on it and it is still hard to start. When I finally do get it to run it runs rough and has to be fully choked. Wants to stall out and has to be revved high to take off. Barely got it home.
I think it may have turned everything when it skidded and jumped time because I hear chatter coming from the motor? but what else could have been damaged as well?
Someone please respond quick THANKS

By skidded do you mean that the rear wheel did not actually turn as it was pushed back??

From you description is sounds like it did turn if it's suddenly running bad. I certainly wouldn't be trying to turn it over.

As it was in gear when it was pushed backwards, it is possible that a gear has been stripped. I agree with cbx4evr and would not be starting it until the gear box and starter motor has been checked.

You may have to check the bike from front to rear meaning the engine etc, and the rear drive to the splines on the rear wheel.

Since the bike was in gear and pushed backwards it is possible that the timing belts skipping due to th wrong direction of travel. Not knowing how old the timing belts are or even if that would make a difference, I would start by pulling the front cover off, setting all the timing marks where they are supposed to be and see how far off it is. That would be your first indicator of why it's running like it's slow on timing.

Check it out thoroughly. I hope the GF has some money.

With the tranny in gear and having a driveshaft, for 10" it seemed like the tire would have slid before it could turn the motor over backwards. If it was on a kickstand you would have had to be lined up perfenctly and the handlebars totally straight for it not have taken some of that 10" and pushed sideways also. The timing belt is on the extreme end of this drive train. Wouldn't it be backfiring if you junped a tooth?

What is the weird issue of needing jum-per cables to start it? You had a perfectly good battery and now it needs jumped? You didn't mention it was grinding or hard to shift when you took it home.
My bike had those running symptoms when my battery was dead and the alternator stopped charging.
Since everyone is guessing, id check the charging system, that chatter may not be the engine but the alternator.

The funniest post was hoping the girlfriend got money.....

I would start with checking the wiring connections. Something may have worked or pulled loose thus causing some of the issues. Also you did mention "buddies GF" so, and I'm just saying here, why didn't you have her insurance pay to have any damages fixed?

If someone hits your car in a driveway, will auto insurance pay or homeowners. My daughters car got hit in a driveway and the homeowners home insurance paid for the damage.....she had full coverage on her car and they said to go to the property owner. I can't wait til this gets figured out....it's been one of the most challenging tech posts i've read in a long time. I hope he figures it out and gives us the details on what it took to fix it.
