Warranty Repair database?

Post by Tootsieroll*Douglas »

Hello GW brothers and sisters.

History: I am on the ragged verge of buying a 2003 GL1800. I recently sold (very sad day for me) my trusty 1979 GL1000 after loving her for eighteen years. I have pulled up all the warranty recalls on the bike I am planning on buying but the seller doesn't seem to have kept a complete record of the completion of the recalls. I have read and printed out copies of all the Honda Warranty recalls, by VIN number/Date of manufacture, and I know which ones are applicable to this bike.

QUESTION: Is there an automated database available that can be accessed that tracks completion of warranty recalls by Honda or an independent group? I checked the Honda website and they seem to only offer help back to 2007 models, nothing older.

I know where the bike has been serviced under warranty. Woods Motorcycle in Austin and Killeen Power Sports, both in Texas.

QUESTION: Will these authorized Honda dealerships provide me with completed warranty data, even if the original ownership data is not in my name?

In reading the recall data sheets, punch marks and other identifying marks should be made on the bike by the person completing the work. Example would be a punch mark on the lower right side of the VIN plate for the frame inspection/repair recall. I haven't yet checked the bike I am intersted in for these marks.

Any experience or information would be greatly appreciated. I have never ridden the GL1800 series....I don't have to....I know I want one.

A Honda dealer should be able to supply that info to you.

I was told of a datqabase once that reached back far enough to reference my 2002 and that too was a misguided venture. Sounds as though you do have the service bulletins advising what recalls are applicable for your 03. That is how I checked up on my bike's history as well, the only one I have not located concerns the secondary master cylinder and how the bike is marked to indicate completion. Off hand looking for an easy recall history seems to be unavailable outside a dealership, if they even have such a thing.

Go Falcons! I noticed you are Retired Air Force. My brother in law is a retired C141? pilot and taught at the AF Academy. Thanks for the reply. I do have the recall information and have noticed now that there is a 1-800 number to call. I haven't tried that yet. That number may be listed for Honda technicians to call with questions but I will try. I looking at Serive Bulletin, safety recall for 2002-2004 GL1800A's Linked Braking System (LBS) Proportional Control Valve (PCV) Leakage. If this is the one you are still trying to verify, this document says there should be a punch mark on the VIN plate. What doesn't make since to me is they don't say where on the VIN plate that punch mark should be. For the frame inspection, it specifically calls for a punch mark in the lower right hand corner of the VIN plate. It does say this...NOTE: Verification of the repair can also be found in the Dealer Responsibility Report and on "iN" (Whatever that is). Continued.... If you have any questions about repair verification, please contact your DSM or Techline at 800-421-1900 before proceeding. END

I am going to try to call that number now.

Again thanks for responding. I am a retired Police Lieutenant and now work on Fort Hood, TX, Range Safety. It was another very bad day at Fort Hood with the shooting/murder incident here.

Doug, normally a trip to the Honda Motorcycle dealer with a copy of the VIN will get you what you want to know. They will do a VIN search and print out the desired information.

Mike,
Thanks a million. I am thinking the same thing but haven't yet tested those waters. Picked up my (new to me) 2003 Wing today. First time I've riddent the GL1800.....WOW! Can't believe I waited so long to get one. Beautiful bike with less than 16K on the odometer.
