Mirror mounted turn signal indicators

Post by wing rider 2012 »

I finished the mod to my mirrors, I installed turn signal indicators. I used "high flux" yellow LEDs from Superbright, they cost .25 each, got a circuit board from Radio Shack for 2.00 and here is the results.

This is the LED's

LEDs mounted to the circuit board, I cut the circuit board at 45 degrees, used 7 led's per board.

Checked to make sure they all worked

This is after they were mounted on the mirror mount and reinstalled on the bike.

Nice! How did you install the boards in the mirror housings? Are there holes drilled for the l.e.d.s to show through?

Very nice job indeed, please do tell how you mounted them behind the mirror and did you have to remove any of the silvering? 8-)

All vehicle rear view mirrors are somewhat transparent. This is to decrease the reflected light from headlights at night. Some of the light passes through instead of being reflected back.

Because of the LED's being mounted on a circuit board, I cut a 45 degrees slot in the mirror mount to mount the circuit board. The only stuff you have to remove off the mirror is the bonding agent they use to secure the mirror to the mount, and I only removed it to where the LED's will mount. The LED's will shine through the mirror because the mirror is kind of translucent, kind of like a sheet of mylar. In order as to not scratch the mirror I removed the mirror from the mount, this is the most difficult portion of the whole project. You have to heat the mirror to soften the bonding agent, I put them in the oven at 150 degrees for about 5 minutes, this also allows the ABS plastic to become a little more flexable, then I carefully popped the mirror out of the mount using a knife inserted between the mirror and the mirror mount, working the knife back and forth to release the mirror from the bonding agent. Once the mirror is removed I can then cut the mount to fit the LED's, reinstall the mirror after cleaning the area where the LED's will mount, I used mineral spirits for this. I then installed the circuit board with the LED's and secured them in place with RTV. I chose RTV because it will adhere to ABS and also waterproof the board. I wired the circuit into the wiring at the mirror housing used for the running lights and turn signals, positive went to the turn signal wire and negative went to the ground wire, I used male and female 2 pin connectors just in case I had to remove them later, that way I didn't have to cut wires.
