1980 GL1100i
I just got this bike up and running and I am in the process of changing the oil.
1. The bolt holding the oil filter cover refuses to turn. I am guessing that it is regulation right hand threads and not left hand threads. Am I correct? If not I will have to cut it off some how and replace it. I will change it to a spin on filter.
2. Really dumb question. How do you determine how much oil is in the bike? I know that the capacty is 4.2 qts but the oil port cover does not have a dipstick on it.

Re: oil change
Yup, the oil window is on the right side:
As for the filter bolt - it is a standard thread, so just keep trying, perhaps an impact wrench?

Thank you Grumpytroll and Wingman. I would never have thought of looking for a window.

I'd suggest downloading the owners manual from the manuals page!

Re: oil change
The stuck oil filter bolt is a common problem. You didn't mention if the bolt head is rounded off. If it is rounded and a wrench won't grab solidly, then use a good vise grip ( one with sharp teeth on the jaws). While your trying to turn the bolt with the vise grip, also gently tap the end of the bolt with a hammer. Nothing crazy, just enough to help jar the bolt loose.
As a last resort, I've taken a grinder and carefully ground off the head of the bolt, being careful not to damage the filter housing. Then just slide the housing over the bolt and replace the bolt.
Once you get it apart make sure all the parts are there and in the correct order. As you take it apart, first you'll remove the filter, then a large washer and then a large spring.
I hope this is helpful. Ernie

Re: oil change
in addition to those very good suggestions a very light coating of anti-sieze paste will prevent it from ever happening again.
