Rebuild GL1500

Post by Bjoennavind »

Hi there!

Does anyone know how i can turn this:

Into this:

I really want to rebuild my Aspencade, turning it in to a beautiful classic and naked bike. Remove the fueltank and fit a new one "where its supposed to be", and remove all the eletrical stuff i "dont need" . Also Install a classic headlamp, new handlebars and new instruementpanel and new fenders.

Of course it would be much easier to just sell the bike and buy a Valkyrie, but where's the fun in that? :P

My main concern is how to install a new fueltank. What kind of tank would fit the frame with minimal adjustments? Maybe the fueltank from a Valkyrie would do the trick, but i am more after that square look.

As I study pictures of the frame i realize that this will be very interesting. The frame is not very "rebuild-friendly" :P

When it comes to the electrical system, i planned to just expose all the wires and remove those who aint critical. Leaving just the basic wires left. Such as enginerelated wires, headlight/turn/brake light, horn and maybe cruise control :P

Is there any thoughts around this? Anything will help! :D

i know this is a year old but did you ever find a gas tank for relocation? i put a tombstone 2 u.s. gal tank on and covered with my own faux skin. but i was just wondering for my next project. getting rid of the on board tank allowed me ample room for all electrical and battery also. someone had a catch can for radiator mounted down same side frame tube what looked to me as a mountain climbers fluid bottle 20ounce capacity made out of aluminum with an flat o-ring gasket for cap seal with holes drilled in cap for in and drain hose. i found one at moms' house that she (84) used for her drinking water bottle for her walking exercise routine and she told me to go get my own at wal-mart. went there and found them in different colors bought a blue one, worked fine, bike sold to a friend and i haven't heard anything about it. been a little over six months. still i would like to know , please, what you found. thanks, cuyler

This thread is only 4 days old :-)
I have not found any interesting gas tanks yet. Will update as soon as i find something. Does anyone know the measurments on the frame where the tank will be? I cannot find my measurment tape :-P
