THOUGHT IT WAS MY CARBS!! MAYBE NOT??? HELP
First off thanks to all the replies to my other posts.. went through all the cleaning and adjusting tips provided and more I came across here and there! Carbs are synced and adjusted and the bikie idles well for like 20 mins a half hour then goes dead. I ride and its like when we first met up to 60 in a flash.. no backfire no hesatation rides great on the Hway get off hit a red light and she dies. Coils are good timeing is on have a DYNA, battery is fairly new I'm just stuck for what to do next.. I've gotten suggestions from buddies the most popular is " Dump that OLD BITCH and get a Harley" I LOVE BUELAH but much like my exwife have come to not understand why she treats me this way,, unlike my exwife I refuse to get rid of her... So if any of you guys know where to send me next PLEASE ALL ARE WELCOME IN THE LIGHT!!

I know this may be a dumb Question & may already been asked but have you checked to see if the fuel tank vent is open ? Could explain running ok for awhile then stalling

Crack the gas cap and see you can replicate the stalling symptom.

Re: THOUGHT IT WAS MY CARBS!! MAYBE NOT??? HELP
I'm with SteveB123 on this one. It sounds like you're building up a vacuum in the fuel tank due to a clogged fuel cap vent. When the bike quits (or falters), try opening the gas cap and see if air rushes in. If so, it will probably start up & run great again. Some people replace the cap when this is the problem, whereas others have drilled a tiny hole in the cap to let air in.

Re: THOUGHT IT WAS MY CARBS!! MAYBE NOT??? HELP
It could be something as simple as a plugged fuel filter or a failing fuel pump as well.
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

I have the same sort of problem with my (old) campervan, and it is because of the vacuum "advance and retard". You should also check the vacuum lines to make sure they have been re-connected tightly, and that the vacuums are right.

You might want to update the motorcycle type in your user profile, so we have a better idea of what type of bike you're having a problem with.

Re: THOUGHT IT WAS MY CARBS!! MAYBE NOT??? HELP
Ok first off I have 2 79 GL1000's or should say one in my yard and one my exwife is holding hostage, getting divorced and she thinks it will be a bargaining tool GO FIGURE. Wanted to finish restoring it this year but it's been there since I was moved out. And that one is my pick of the Two not that I don't LOVE this bike she was my first Wing had a 1500 too but sold it like this model better, the one in jail has 14k on it and new carbs and so much more, I will have it for next year but for now it's just me and Buelah who has been acting up!! Nowhow do I get to my profile can't find it, no wonder I can't find the problem on my bike can't even update my profile!!!
Anyway am soaking the gas cap right now and hopefully it was this venting thing, I'm sure it's not the carbs anymore I did everything short of rebuild took them apart cleaned them real good all the rubber is good all the jets and ports clear they're synced and idle is set fuel filter and lines are new and took feul pump apart and cleaned that too. Valve's have minamal carbon and seem to be set right but not really that knowlageable in that dept, plugs are new wires good new dyna fairly new battery she does have 120k and might just be tired, live in NY went up to Canada last summer wanted to go west this year was gonna take the new (old) bike but again she is being held hostage. I was thinking of renting a bike from a friend who offered but I would feel like I was cheating on my baby, even though she's messin with my head right now.
In any case if ANYBODY has a suggestion on what I could mess with my head next I'm more then open to it.... want to that all you guys who posted replies once again!!!

Re: THOUGHT IT WAS MY CARBS!! MAYBE NOT??? HELP
How long following the 20-30 minutes of riding and engine quitting does it take for you to restart the engine? Does it appear that there's a "cool down" time required to enable the engine to restart or does the engine start again within just a few seconds after it quits?
When you can start it, does it run again for 20-30 minutes and then quit again? I guess I'm asking if the sequence is repeatable or random in how long the bike runs between starts and stops?
If the time the engine will run is about the same each time you try, and it requires time in between starts, I'd venture it is some electrical component failing as it warms up (causing an open in the start/run circuit) and then the cool down allows the circuit to close again. The trouble is, I can't think of anything that would open and close with regularity due to just running the engine.
Coils are known to be heat effected at times. I don't know enough about your ignition to suggest that could be a source of trouble. If the trouble were random, I might think it could be an ignition switch or kill switch, but I don't know that either of them would cause symptoms as you describe them.
My last gasp at a suggestion would be to inspect all fuses and grounds related to ignition to check for corrosion and poor connection(s). Best wishes to your success. I know what it is like to have something you care about held hostage to a former wife.

Re: THOUGHT IT WAS MY CARBS!! MAYBE NOT??? HELP
Just reading above, I noticed valves may need adjusting. I think it's at least possible that a lash clearance to close might cause the problem after warm-up and expansion of components-it could still run on the highway pretty good with valve lash to tight, but have poor idle. Valve lash to tight and unchecked can cause problems.
My exercise bike is a goldwing.
