Brake rotor question

Post by speedy1 »

What would cause brake rotors (front and back) turn black where the pads contact the rotors? Pads are about 50% used and the bike stops fine. Any ideas just throw them my way. Oh by the way, I'm not hard on brakes at all. (1995 SE)

This is usually caused by overheating, although it can occur if you rapidly cool (i.e. douse with water) brake rotors that are extremely hot. However, the most common cause is stuck brakes - i.e. brakes that are stuck on (at least a bit) and are dragging, causing excessive heat. It might not be stuck all the time - a blocked return port could cause the brakes to drag only when they heat up.
