Just wanted to share my experience with most recent tires. I'm an ex. Intruder, Valkyrie, Magna, Royal Star Venture rider who changes his own tires. I've used Metzeler, Avon, Dunlops, etc. over the years.
On August 12, 2013 I installed a Dunlop E3 on the front of my '88 GL1500, mileage 60,930. On September 2, 2013 I installed an Avon Venom on the rear, mileage 62,483. (The ME 880 that was on the back when I bought the bike had just thrown a big chunk out of the tread.)
This week, October 4-8, 2014 I replaced both front and rear tires with Avon Venoms, mileage 80,222. The front E3 still had tread but was cupping and howling. The rear was used right down to the wear bars. That's 19,292 on the front E3 and 17,739 on the rear Avon.
While shopping for tires, the Avons were a bit cheaper than the E3s and I saw no reason to change given the mileage on the rear tire. Many of those miles were two up with my lovely wife and loaded with gear.

It will be interesting to see your comments on handling, wearing, and durability of your Avons, now that you have a pair.

I got about 20,500 miles out of my rear E3 but have also switched to the Venom. No mileage to report as yet but they are wearing nicely and I love the ride. Even if they get less miles than the E3 I think I'll be sticking to the Venom's

Now on my second pair of Venoms on my GL1500. I had about 12,000 miles on my previous set. The rear was starting to get close to the wear bars, the front was OK, but starting to scallop slightly, so I replaced them both.cbx4evr wrote:I got about 20,500 miles out of my rear E3 but have also switched to the Venom. I have 6k+ miles on my Venoms. Very slight wear and no cupping yet. Even though the E3s are a very high mileage tire you couldn't pay me to go back because of the noise and extreme cupping. I am curious about the new dual compound tire.

I just got rid of E3s on my 1100 they had around 15k on them the previous owner ran them low on air so the rear cupped real bad . I put Commander 2s on both ends and couldn't be happier . Maybe when its time to change tires I will buy Venoms.
