So I'm following the step by step instructions on how to do this. all is going well, new water pump is in cover and the next step involves removing the oil pump seal and replacing with new. Simply place screwdriver into seal and gently remove without scratching aluminum housing it sits in. Well, i can't get it out. Appears as though the seal has hardened over time. the more I attempt to remove it, the more I'm tearing up the seal, which is fine since i have a replacement, but man this is tough.
I sprayed a little wd-40 on it and will let it sit overnight.
Any other ideas? The seal is only about an inch in diameter and has a metal band inside it, which I've managed to tear up on one side.
I'm sure I can eventually get it out, but it's tricky with all the aluminum around it. Man, i was close to being done too.
Any ideas??
thanks

Warm the area up with a heat gun.

Re: roadblock on water pump replacement
You've already got it out, but another way of getting it out is to gently drive a drywall screw into it, maybe half an inch or so, then use the screw to pull the seal out.

Re: roadblock on water pump replacement
Man, I finally placed cover back on. This was my first water pump replacement and overall, not too demanding. But, I haven't checked for leaks yet!!! Maybe I should have waited on this post . Here are some pics during the job.
Worst part of the job was definitely cleaning off the old gasket!!!!

Great job, it looks sparkling clean. You could eat off of that cover!
