Changing timing belts on Moneypit

Post by moneypit »

On days when its above 40 degrees I'm working on changing timing belts radiator hoses idler pulleys and oil, filter check valve clearance spark plugs you know all the fun stuff . I noticed the tension on the timing belts are not the same. Sitting on the bike the right belt is much looser than the left now I'm pretty sure the belts should be at the same tension . The belts were changed 40k miles ago by the previous owner at which time he bent some valves after doing so . It doesn't surprise me that the tension is also not correct.

Keep in mind that on one side the top of the belt holds the tension, and on the other side, the bottom of the belt holds the tension. Measure the tension midway between the tension idler wheel and the sprocket on both belts - is that where it is different?
