tour pack install
I have just purchased a 1983 GL1100 yesterday and it came with the tour pack not installed on the bike, can anyone help with the steps to get this tour pack put on the bike, like where are the mounting points on the bike and what has to be removed?

Re: tour pack install
The tour pack bolts to the same frame that holds the saddle bags. Are there saddle bags on the bike? If so, should be a frame work coming up over the rear fender for the top box. If that is there it would be pretty obvious. I am guessing you don't have the framework?

Re: tour pack install
I borrowed a pic of 'wingman12's' factory mounting of the trunk box. It should help you understand what is needed and should be there for mounting.
Thank you wingman12 for letting me use it, even though I forgot to ask before I did.
Forgive me!

Re: tour pack install
I have the frame work and saddle bags, they are already mounted to the tour pack, my bad I meant the entire setup, saddle bags and all need to go on the bike. PO handed me everything completely set up together, just not on the bike, lol. So do I tear it all apart or can I install it in one piece as a unit? thanx for the feed back.

Re: tour pack install
If my memory serves me correctly. You install the trunk support framing. ( I am assuming your trunk can be removed from the frame with a key) it is like having a preloaded suitcase when you travel. No electrical ( unless the po added some). Then add the bags and connect the elect to lights on the bags. At least that is how the 82 went together. I did not have to remove any of the frame supports for the trunk or bags so I am not real sure where they are bolted to the frame.

Re: tour pack install
I am not sure, but I think the bags and trunk would have to come off and then you mount the frame and then reinstall the trunk and bags.

Re: tour pack install
I agree. you are going to have to remove the bags and trunk in order to install the frame on your bike. hopefully the po provided you with the original nuts and bolts for the install. if not be sure to get alum or stainless nuts bolts and washers

Re: tour pack install
yes there is a bunch of bolts and nuts here in the hard bags but may get new ones anyways and start fresh, but no instructions, lol.
Tomorrow I will have a friend stop by and gimme a hand gettin this sorted out, but I am excited. Need to get the front brake workin, forks aired up and carbs sync'd and then we will be rockin and rollin.

Re: tour pack install
Good luck with the front brake. hopefully you don't have to rebuild the caliber. on the 82 I had to replace 2 pistons and rebuild the master break cylinder before I could get the front brakes to work correctly. please keep me posted on your progress and happy riding

Re: tour pack install
I don't know if you mentioned it earlier but what ever you do change the timing belts ASAP unless the po has verified recent replacement change them before you do much riding. if one breaks you will probably trash the engine

I will be looking forward to seeing your bike once you get her clothes back on. any idea if or when the timing belts were charged by the po?
