CB Squeal

Post by tonypil »

HELP! I have a 2002 GL1800A with a stock radio in which I had a Bike MP3 CB radio installed at WingDing last July. I am the only rider in my group who has this radio and it receives well, but emits a loud squeal in everyone's headset (and mine) when I transmit, unless I am 100 feet or more away from the nearest bike.
Pete at MP3 exchanged my unit for a new Evolution upgrade, but without improvement. Pete thinks that the problem is with a defective Honda OEM radio and thought that there may be a fix available from Honda (a secret recall?) My local Honda dealer has been no help and suggests that I replace the MP3 with a Honda CB (at significant cost).
Has anyone had or is aware of this problem with GL1800s and the Bike MP3 CB radio and how to fix it?
Is there a secret recall on any of the OEM AM/FM/WB radios?
My riders group are nice guys, but they don't want me to transmit on rides. Thanks in advance for your help.

This is normally caused by RF feedback. You are transmitting a signal, which transmits using RF. The RF signal is inducing current in the input/audio portion of the system, which enters the CB, is transmitted, that signal is induced, and around and around you go - which causes the feedback.

You first have to determine where the signal is being induced. First disconnect all your helmets and the helmet wires from the bike, then transmit (you'll have to have someone else with a CB listening on their radio). If the squeal goes away, then you have either a bad ground or inadequate shielding in one of your helmet leads or headsets.

If the squeal doesn't go away, the problem is in the CB/antenna system itself.

The most common cause of RF feedback in the CB is a bad ground either on the antenna or on the case of the CB, or inadequate shielding on the wiring for the CB.

Check the ground wire on the CB, as well as the ground strap for the antenna itself. Check the antenna cable, and all the antenna connections to make sure they are in good shape and not corroded.

You might also want to have the SWR of the antenna checked - if the SWR is really off, it can reflect enough of the transmitted signal back into the radio that it induces feedback into the audio section of the radio INSIDE the radio. Normally however, if the SWR is off this much, it is due to a bad antenna ground.
