Hi guys, been a while since I visited with everyone. Just bought my newest project. I bought a 1998 GL1500SE from a dealer, knew it had some issues, got home and took it on a two hundred mile benefit poker run and it didn't take very long to find out it had a lot more issues than I thought. But as you might have guessed it was an as is deal. the cruise didn't work, had an intermittent miss, and to top things off a hundred miles into the ride it quit. Limped it home and stared in to it.. I found the clutch switch boot had worn out causing the switch not to depress, fixed it with a piece of rubber hose on the stem on the handle, works great. After doing some reading of posts on this sight I finally got up the courage to go after the spark plugs, found one fouled, put all new plugs in, runs better. Still looses power under high speeds and under a good load. Did some more reading of posts. Checked out the vacuume fuel shut off. Aha found a hose had been chewed by a little furry thing, replace the bad piece of hose, ran better. Still looses power and also noticed it had an idle flutter. S%$t. Did some more post reading. It wasn't looking good for you know who, who does't really want to diassemble my new ride. took a gamble on a hunch from some of the things I read, and sure enough the fuel "petcock" {I'm not sure who came up with that term} diaphragm had a large tear in it, removed it and ordered parts. Had another thought, bypassed it, test drove it to see if I was going to lose power again, YIPEE, runs great. Gonna put the kit in the "petcock" and I think I'll have a good running bike. Thanks for all the posts, they really helped.

See...this is proof that you were not just playing on the Internet after all .
It is well worth the free membership isn't it.
Direct from Wikipedia..."A petcock is a small shut-off valve used to control the flow of liquid or gas. Historically, petcocks were threaded valves controlled by a butterfly handle;[citation needed] modern petcocks are typically ball valves."
