Need help! Dune buggy with 1980 gl1100?
Long story short: I want to use my dads old goldwing motor to build a long travel dune buggy for silver lake sand dunes. I know these motors push out around 80 hp stock, I was wondering if anyone here had any good info on getting performance parts for this motor and what I would need to do to get 100+ hp out of it. Any and all suggestions welcome. Heres a link of what I want to build. ▶ LONG TRAVEL DUNE BUGGY BUILD SAND RAIL chassis with MOTORCYCLE ENGINE - YouTube

OK. At the risk of being shot by the guys on the forum. I would restore dads bike to original and say chuck a CBR 1000 in the go kart. I have a friend in the UK that has one and F$&@ its scary.
Goldwings deserve to be kept original.
Just my opinion though!
If you do decide to use the Goldwings engine please send me the rest of the bike and I will fit a CBR engine to that.
Touring at 180 mph could fun!

I respect your view in keeping the GW original. I thought since I have the motor and my dad will never ride the bike again, it would be a one of a kind dune buggy. Biggest problem I'm finding is because the motor is so old, it's going to be hard finding parts to upgrade the motor to the HP that I'm looking for.

Cool project but I think the motor will disappoint. But do it or you will never know!

that's what I'm worried about. I don't want to spend the time and money only to be disappointed. I've also been looking at gsx-r motors and busa motors and the cbr1000 like you mentioned. It always boils down to money....

Keep in mind that the CBR motor makes its power at huge revs, where the GL1100 motor will make much more power (and more importantly, torque) at lower RPMs. Which you want for the transmission/vehicle setup, I don't know.

I want a buggy that can do it all honestly. I don't need ridiculous speed because you can only go so fast in the dunes. I want explosive power and an ability to do some light sand racing/drag racing.

I've heard of people adding twin turbos and I think Randakk added a supercharger...
Heres a tiny bit of info:
http://thekneeslider.com/turbo-gold-win ... the-first/
http://thekneeslider.com/randakks-super ... 00-gl1100/
Not sure what you could do with that, but mounted in the open like that would make big changes pretty easy. Would you try to keep some kind of shaft drive or what? Good luck!

You may want to investigate if you will have to modify the oil pick up for the motor if it is used in a buggy. Some racing karts that use motorcycle engines need to have the oil pick up modified for the engine to live in turns when the motor stays flat at high g's. Bikes are generally designed to have the motor at an angle when they experience high centripetal force, the oil pick up is placed with that assumption. Don't know if the GW is an exception but you could end up with oil starvation if it isn't. Somewhere someone will know. If all else fails email mother Honda.

Explosive you might get, explosive power you most certainly won't.
There are zero upgrade options for the 1100. No high comp pistons (in fact, no pistons full stop), no high lift cams (you can get someone like Megacycle to regrind @ $400 on your cores!), crank bearings are getting to the unicorn horn stage, etc etc etc.
In fact, given the weight of this engine unit at 220lbs with carbs and shaft drive, I really can't think of a more unsuitable one for what you want to do.

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

this is why I asked...you just confirmed my suspicions. Thank you sir! I'm set on a LS4 engine. I can get the whole motor, trans and wiring harness for $2k and it's 300 hp stock!

I recently bought a buggy that is powered by a 1978 gl1000 wasn’t geared right when I got it in the middle of re gearing the setup that’s on it right now
