HID Headlamp

Post by DennyH »

I installed a HID headlamp in my 1987 GL1200I and was wondering if anyone has experienced heat or melting problems from this type of lamp and related hardware? I have not seen it as yet but will be leaving on an extended trip and I am a little concerned. THANKS

Very unlikely, being that HID bulbs put out far less heat than the halogen bulb that the bike comes with and is designed for.

You do need to watch for 55W lamps/ballasts. Normally the HID setups are 35W, but some sell the 55W versions. They are brighter, but I've seen warnings about the 55W versions melting headlight housings etc. This has been in car applications, rather than motorcycles, but I'd think the same warning would apply.

I tried some brighter, whiter bulbs in the fog lamps of my 2014 Nissan Altima, and they melted the housings...pretty much melted the bulbs right into the housings, so the bulbs won't come out any more, so I'll have to replace both fog lamp housings at some point.
