Bike won't fire up

Post by dbenson »

I have come across a 1985 aspencade 1200, the bike just cranks and cranks but will not fire up, shops can not figure it out. Any help or tips would be great as to where to start would be great.

More history please. Is this a new to you bike? Did this problem start suddenly? What do the "shops" say about this? We need to know a lot more in order to diagnose. Engines need compression, spark and correctly metered fuel. ???

its a pretty simple machine. If that shop cant figure out the problem maybe you should find a better shop. 8-)

It's either fuel or electric. Hope for the fuel, you'll get good at diagnosing electrical issues the longer you own the bike. I've never had vaccuum problems...(oh crap, I prolly just cursed myself). Don't buy junk (HF) electrical diagnostic tools.

Maybe it is kinda like mine was-didn't mention someone had "worked" on it-put the timing belts on wrong-bent 5 valves, and broke 1 valve guide off....told me " he lost the key, and it popped when he tried to start it (he wasn't the one that done the "work", but I think he knew more than he told me). Do a compression check before you buy....
