I have a strange issue with the headsets on my 96 SE.
For a while now, the right speaker in my headset would randomly shut off and on (mostly off), although the left one would continue playing just fine. I’ve taken the radio all apart and cleaned the connections, added dielectric grease and reconnected everything making sure that all connections were snug; all to have it continue doing the same thing.
Something even stranger is that it does it at the same time with the passenger headset, but the left speaker goes out and the right keeps playing. I’ve swapped helmets and the symptoms are the same.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Strange headset issue
My guess:
A connection at the radio, or a wire is going bad.
One of the helmets has the headsets installed backwards (left on right, and vice versa) so that when the connector/wire intermittently opens, the opposite channels in the helmets disappears.

I've verified all the wires are in the connectors well and cleaned the connections and made sure that they are tight at the radio.WingAdmin wrote:My guess:

If a wire is going bad, it should be either #13 or 14 on the 18 pin connector, right? Will I be able to detect via a continuity check?
I thought about that. J&M actually did the install of an integrated headset, but I guess they could mess up as well as I could.WingAdmin wrote:One of the helmets has the headsets installed backwards (left on right, and vice versa) so that when the connector/wire intermittently opens, the opposite channels in the helmets disappears.

Re: Strange headset issue
I was researching your issue last night, but didn't have time to post anything. Still don't. BUT, I did see notes in the service manual about NOT reading resistance on the pins that go into the radio. I doubt there would be a problem reading resistance on the wires, just don't try to read the radio itself. I'm guessing the electronics can't handle whatever power source is used by the meter (battery) to make the reading. Just thought I'd throw that out for your consideration.

Thanks for trying. I saw that in the manual as well.
I've got a GWRRA District rally to go to in the morning, so I had to put everything back together quickly today.
I'll tear it apart again next week and run the continuity tests on the wires.
