light up windshield
Hello everyone. I'm new to the Goldwing and to the site. I must say I have been on many forum pages for many different things from cars to golf carts to whatever. But this is one of best ones I have ever looked into. I found a lot of great info on here. Everything but what I'm looking for now. I have 1983 Goldwing GL1100 that I just bought. The windshield on this bike has 4 little lights down in the fairing that makes the windshield light up green. This seams to me as it is stock but I could be wrong. I was wondering if there is a way to replace the green bulbs with blue bulbs. I have LED lights on the bottom of the bike so when we are sitting on the road or parking lot we can be seen. the LED's are blue and thought it would be cool if they matched.

Definitely NOT stock!!
You would probably have to wire in new, blue LEDs, if that's the route you want to go, but be aware that in some jurisdictions, forward facing blue lights/LEDs are not legal!

I was worried about that also. I know years ago a gal I was with had a blue neon licence plate bracket and we got pulled over and told I had to unplug it now or he would sit us a ticket. But you would think since Bikes are harder to see at night they would over look that.

Lights and their colors have meanings. Lit up windshields are fine in a parade or show on a mall or other private property ... on a highway ... no matter the color, it was good ticket. Same with neon license plate frames that do nothing but make it harder to read the plate itself.rbeetz1 wrote:I was worried about that also. Your green lighted windshield could get you a ticket in Canada. Green is the color for volunteer fire fighters on route to a fire. Parked, none of the rules should count. Only if in motion.

Re: light up windshield
as stated added lights in the wrong place or color can get you in trouble, on the thought of blue on the windshield, even if legal I strongly recommend you not do it. I did mine in blue once and can tell you it is the worst possible color to use as it seriously hampers your vision at night
I found red works great, it helps reduce glare from other lights and if done right is only seen around the edges of the windshield here is a pic of mine after I etched an eagle into the lower face of the screen

Re: light up windshield
The way it's wired now it comes on as soon as I turn the key. I think I will have to move to where it has it's own switch so I can turn it on when parked. The last thing I need is a ticket. I know the green works well at night. Like yours it only lights the edges of the windshield. There are also LED lights under the fake tank but they are on there own switch so it doesn't come on unless I push the switch. Makes it kinda light if you pull over at night to take a brake. You can see to walk around without all the lights on. I will post a pic when I get back to the office since my phone doesn't seam to want to insert it on here.

Re: light up windshield
I would say to put it on it's own switch, I found riding in the rain with the shield light on was a bad idea as well, the lights would light up the rain drops and that would get fairly distorted
I don't have any lights on my current 1500 but I plan on adding them soon

Re: light up windshield
the green looks good, what color is the bike
what is that in the middle, is that a vent or is that where the lights are mounted
one of the reasons I haven't done my 1500 yet is because it has a vent and I don't want the light being transferred into it
I think I'll paint the inner section of the cut out black so the light can't transfer to the vent itself
I don't want any light above the dash level to glare, distract or interfere with my vision. I have had to train myself to ignore my
traffic cam that sits on top of the dash just under the vent

Re: light up windshield
The bike is black. I was thinking of painting it this winter but we will see. Right under the side marker light is a vent. I don't think it's functionable. I thinks it's just for looks. but the light above it was there when I got the bike. I like it because you can see me at night. I added some red LED light to the rear since there was only the tail light back there.
