oil filters

Post by lobabooby »

Can anyone give me the cross reference numbers for replacement oil filters, that are found in local auto parts stores?.. And do they come with the nessasary "O"rings?. it's time for a filter change on my'83 interstate. Oil looks fine. but i think a filter change is going to help keep it that way a little longer. Before a complete change....One more question, Is Shell Rotella "T" the oil i should be using? Just making sure!.. Boy, i'm just full of questions!.. :)

i was not sure if synthetic oil had any real long term advantages. So, i've been using petroleum based Shell, Rotella "T" in my '83 and not the synthetic. i look at things from a cost vs. benefit view..... And does it warrant using synthetic over petroleum.? if not, my money goes towards what the engineers at honda, back in '83, specified to use. It's what ever you prefer i guess?....

I use a NAPA PS4940 on my GL1100 (should also fit your GL1200), and it comes with both the O-rings required. I also use these Emgo filters that also come with everything you need, and they work great.

I have never used synthetic oil in my bikes, I always use motorcycle-specific oil (Motul in my high-performance bikes, Valvoline in the Wing), and have never had a problem.

are ya sayin you want to change the filter to keep from changing the oil?! that's crazy!
change the oil and filter at the same time. then change it again after 3-5k miles or next year.

My advice would be to stay way from synthetic oil in any vehicle that uses a wet clutch with shared engine oil, such as the goldwing.

A lot of synthetic oils use anti-friction additives that can reduce the performance of your clutch.

I use only synthetic in my cars and love it, but never in my bike.

Exactly. I do exactly the same thing, for exactly the same reasons.
