We a bad ground cabe on the battery cause my starter to melt down

It's possible, yes.

If the ground cable was bad, and was limiting the amount of current flowing, it could cause this. There wouldn't be enough current getting through to start the bike, but MORE than enough to heat up and cook the starter, if you tried to start it for long enough.
