What can you do when the old radio doesn't work anymore

Post by mrall » Fri Nov 03, 2017 11:14 am

The old Panasonic Radio stopped working, so I decided to upgrade. The problem was finding a radio that was affordable and would fit in to radio mount. While I know there are radios that might fit, I noticed that they were either too expensive or didn't have all the features I wanted. So I started to think out of the box.
Instead of the radio being crammed into the Panasonic slot, I decided to put a USB, DC Voltage meter, and cigarette lighter panel into the radio slot $13.
I then installed a very low profile 7" touchscreen AMFM/MP3/MP5/Bluetooth/Backup Camera/GPS into the gas tank fairing over the fuse box $65. You might ask "Why a backup camera that bike does not even have reverse?" The answer is simple, I hooked it up to a switch so I could look behind me where the mirrors can't see, anytime I want. The camera has night vision even cooler. I made a cover out of aluminum with rubber on all edges to cover the screen and protect it from the weather.

I made videos of the whole installation process and will post them if anyone is interested.

My radio quit couple years ago, I don't miss it.
I listen to natures radio. One channel, always changing.
CHIRP-CHIRP.... RIB-BIT RIB-BIT .. .. Eagle screech ... etc.. 8-)

AHHhhh but she needs her noise.
CD player, tho she's changing it on the run.
Sometimes music on her phone with earplugs. A 32 GB SD card can load A LOT of MP3 tunes. ;)

Very impressive! Good job on the new radio! I am in the planning stage for a modern stereo system for my old Hondog too. Unfortunately mine won't be as elaborate or cool as yours though. We'd like to see your pictures when you have time. Thanks.

Good solution to the radio problem! What model/brand is that radio? That looks like it could be a good candidate to eventually replace the radio in mine, I have a 1500 so a low profile touchscreen like that would be a perfect type of replacement for the stock radio location.
Winging it every chance I get 8-)

19,119 miles when I got it from dad Oct 15, 2017 --- 22,872 miles and counting as of June 27, 2018!

I can't find quite deal I found, but here is a link. You will need to search for 7" GPS Radio. The order tends to take 3 weeks to get but I wasn't in a hurry.

I'm not so big on keeping my bike all original. I wanted all the gadgets. So I wasn't concerned with attempting to get it fixed, after all I don't have any cassette tapes.

Very nice job where did you buy the Usb, volt meter, and cig lighter gauges
Does the radio have a name and model I think this would be perfect for my 86 interstate. might have to do things a little different since my Interstate never had a radio so now case to work with
Very Impressive good work

That is one of the coolest things I've ever seen anyone do on one of these old wings. I thought that I was going out on a limb cutting up the right fairing lid to put a radio in mine. Hell, you destroyed the tank cover.

Well, I think I'll just cut this hole bigger and put a TV in there" Beautiful.
