extracting a frozen oil seal

Post by Goldmine »

Greetings All: First of all, a huge Thanks to WingAdmin for his 'How To' article on installing a new water pump on the 1100.....a first rate piece of work......so helpful to me!! All was going well with the project until it came to extracting the oil shaft seal. I tried everything I could think of without damaging the seal cavity but it wouldn't budge. I'm about to get out the cold chisels......so if there are any other suggestions out there before I proceed....sure would be appreciated.......Cheers

It should just slip right out if you get a screwdriver, or seal puller behind it.

Take to sheet metal screws and screw them into the seal across from each other.....pull on the screws. Surprised a screw driver wont pop it out though.
Mind over Matter:
You don't mind , it don't matter..... :D

Thanks so much..Dave0430 and Kurt J for your quick response....very helpful suggestions. I should have realized that somewhere out there, one could buy a seal puller and I can see that the the sheet metal screws would have worked too. As it turns out, just after posting I noticed a similar thread......suggesting a hot air gun to loosen things up......it still took a fair bit of effort, but finally it popped out with no damage to the aluminum. Again....Thanks so much......hope some day I can help the next fellow out!
