longevity of timing belts?

How many miles will new timing belts give me? I ride easy.

It is not only a matter of mileage but also of age and environment. Rubber is also effected by heat, airborne ozone, airborne volatiles as well as other factors.

It is not hard and not expensive, approx $30 each belt. The belts are available from different sources and do not need to come from Honda. Some people change the tensioners as well but many don't. Once your done, take the change info sticker that comes with the belt and fill it out and stick it on a frame tube on the side of the bike under one of the covers. Adds value to the bike as well as letting you know it was done.

For me, another factor beside age or mileage is how long the belts have been sitting in one position. Many of these get parked and not touched for few years. This gives the belts a chance to take a set to how they’re positioned. Not many people have broken one and not done damage.

I think I saw in another post somewhere here that they should be changed every 50,000 miles. If that is actually what I saw, then I would think the answer to how many miles would be - more than 50,000 miles. Most Gates belts have 100,000 mile life expectancy, such as Harley final drive belts, and automobile serpentine fan belts, so I would think that as long as the bike is being used and ridden, the more use, the more life.

It isn't such a big job, nor expensive, that 50K miles/5 to7 years is a good rule of thumb. I think that schedule will avoid any issues and the cost is minimal compared to the damage that a broken belt will cause. Don't forget about the idler pulleys, also. Cheap insurance!

OK..eventually, I'll b selling the bike & some guy wanted to know. They were changed 3 yrs ago & I only put on about 1500 miles / yr. Thanx

I bought my belts at NAPA and they were way cheaper than Honda and made by the same outfit. If I remember correctly (I have CRS) they cost me $28. And they came with a nice sticker that you can fill out when they were changed , so there is a record. I affixed it in the trunk along with tire info and oil change etc. I also put this info in the owners manual for that bike. They will last almost as long as you want them to!

I usually run my belts for 160,000 km/100,000 mi before installing another set of Gates timing belts. Cheapest price is from Rock Auto.
Honda recommends they be inspected, every 100,000 mi!
