Phillips had screws

They look like phillips head screws, but if you use a phillips head screwdriver the chance of stripping out the X cut on the head is very great

The real question is why does my '03 Goldwing which was built in the USA have "JIS is Japanese Industrial Standard" screws in it? Metric is one thing but to use JIS is Japanese Industrial Standard screws that nobody even stocks a screw driver to fit. Can't by at any hardware, automotive or tool store around here, I have asked, need to go to internet to find. Some of these bikes were built before there was internet shopping. OK I'll stop my rant, but just feel this is poor engineering, if anyone can really figure out an engineers thinking. Take them out once put allen head back in and be done with problem.

Maybe if Phillips had screws they would have used them.

Now it makes sense after all these years... Back in the 60s I discovered that I could break loose stubborn screws by gripping the 'cheap' tool kit Philips screwdriver shaft with the pliers. Now I know why. Amazing.

No tool kit with my 2016. From what I've heard, it's been a while since they've come with them.

I've been working professionally on Japanese bikes and cars since 1979 and have never owned a JIS screwdriver and never had a problem with screws. I have always had good quality tools, no craftsman or harbor freight kind of junk.

Craftsman looks like #4 here. I've had the same set of Craftsman tools my dad bought for me for my 18th birthday back in '83. Not one has broken. Maybe not used as extensively as your tools, but it also doesn't seem like only my opinion that they are not junk.

Strange they didn't even mention Matco or Cornwell. I will admit craftsman tools are strong, some of them, but their box end wrenches and impact sockets are too thick and their chrome sockets are brittle and their screwdriver tips are butter soft and their ratchets strip in a stiff breeze. I have a set of Husky tools I won in a competition in 1977 and still have and use them regularly, and they came in at #8.

It’s just one poll or website’s opinion, so who knows for sure. Newer Craftsman tools don’t seem to rate so well. Maybe that’s why I’m so satisfied with mine.

I’ve not had a need to sprint for a newer or better set, but have bought specialty stuff occasionally over the years. Just like I’m sure I’ll get me a set of JIS screwdrivers for my Wing now that I’m aware of them and their use.

I just managed to break the ONLY 3/8" Titanium drill bit I have with a locking stem on it for my battery drill motor...... pissed don't even get close to how I feel about that...... and the project I am working on can't be finished until I replace that bit.

Wallering a hole larger with a drill bit.

Funny we talk about Quality tools, Seems like on my 91 i have to use the cheap jap JIS screwdriver out of my cheap jap tool kit Honda provided to loosen the cheap Jap JIS screws for my overpriced american snap on screwdrivers. In fact i think my set of 6 snap on screwdrivers were like $140 , But a good set of JIS screwdrivers are not cheap either, I have been a mechanic for 30 years and it's been a long secret that japanese motorcycles use JIS screw, in fact there are a lot o Motorcycle mechanics do not know about JIS screws, thus stripped screw from dealer worked on bike, guess that is why i wrench on my own bikes

The Vessel JIS screwdrivers that I use now are an absolute pleasure to work with. Comfortable handles, and a knurled section on the shaft just below the grip, so you can spin them quickly. I used them on everything now, not just JIS screws, just because I like them so much.

Stripped the screw on the bottom of my right side mirror while installing Muth mirrors. Very frustrating for sure. Luckily a screw extractor worked nicely and happy the Muth mirrors came with replacement screws. I would like to buy a kit of JIS screw drivers though. Wonder if I could find them on Amazon. I never knew they existed.

If you have Harbor Freight in your neighborhood, they have a JIS screw Driver kit for $7.99...PN 90764. Or, if you would like to have a single one, PN 94707 is for $1.69. I have this single one and it works quite well for my Wing and for my dirt bike. Wish I had known about JIS many years ago, as it would have saved many stripped screw heads.

Both of those part number dirtwinger provided are described as phillips tips on the HF website.

Harbor Freight describes the screw drivers as "Phillips," but it is obvious that, when the tip is compared to a standard #2 Phillips, the shape is different, and is more like that of a JIS. And, a JIS screw driver will work for a Phillips screw as well as a JIS screw. I am not alone recommending the Harbor Freight ones, as I learned of these from another GL forum where this same discussion went on forever. When I insert my Harbor Freight screw driver in the head of a screw on my Japanese bikes, then try a Craftsman #2 Phillips screw driver on the same screw, it becomes obvious the fit is much more secure with the Harbor Freight one. I don't know if any other Harbor Freight screw drivers are JIS. Only the part numbers I previously listed are known to me as okay. For a buck sixty-nine, how could you go wrong? Try it! You'll like it!
