Engine Coolant

Is there a suitable substitute to Honda coolant? I plan on changing my coolant but can't find a coolant that says it is silicate and borate free. I don't have a Honda store close, and have spent a lot of time reading labels, but none seem to fit the bill. I have found one coolant that Says it is safe for Honda but I am thinking that is a Honda car. Any input would be greatly appreciated

I found 'Beck-Arnley Euro SF+ Concentrate' in the local auto parts store, 'Made in Germany', and specifically mentions no amines, nitrates, phosphates or silicates on the label.

A little on the 'spendy' side (probably no more than Honda coolant though) but it looks like a product the GL1500 will be happy to have inside her...

Honda car coolant is fine to use. I see you are in Canada. This will work just fine.

Was in Can tire today and found that Honda compatible product, picked up a jug nothing left to do but get the flushing done.

Is Prestone 50/50 predeluted with Cor-Guard silicate free? I have a Honda that calls for silicate free coolant, am I safe with this Prestone product?

Pam ; I've been using Peak anti-freeze in my Wings here in Arizona for over thirty years with no adverse effects , whatsoever . My "78" GL-1000 had over 860,000 miles on it when I sold it three years ago , and the current owner says he has put another 100 thou on it since . My current "83" GL-1100A has over 400,000 on it , and no heat / Temp issues that I've noticed . Since I do all of my own engine work , I would have noticed anything in the negative .

Looking at the waterless coolant , but haven't made my mind up yet . Hard to switch from something you know works .

I get this at WAL MART for about $13.00
says its silicate and borate free.
Use it in my 86 GL1200, 82 GL500 and 84 FT500 Ascot. for years with no problems.

Just my two cents..

Well I finallly got the coolant changed, Pulled the drain plug the coolant was a nice tourquise blue color. Drained nicley and I was thinking this shouldn't take to long. Now the filling I poured the new coolant into a clean glass measuring cup to make it more managable and started the fill. It was pretty slow going as the filler neck is quite small. About the time I was starting to think the block was getting full and also a bit concerned because I had hardly poured an coolant into the system the bubbling started. Bubble then dribble in coolant bubble and dribble in coolant. This went on for about two cups of coolant until the bubbling stopped and the filler neck stayed full. Started the bike and more bullbbling and dribbling until the rad wouldn't hold any more and no more bubbling. Refilled the coolant resivour and called it good. Bike runs cooler on the center stand and it takes longer for the fans to cut in. I used an infared heat cun and checked the heat at the back of both heads on the engine both within a couple of degrees of each other at 165 so I am thinking job done Total time about two hours

Where I live we have these handy things called a funnel. And it works better if you have it on the side stand to refill the coolant.

I get the side stand appraoch which will allow the air in the block to rise to the high side, and I guess I should an made mention of the nice red funnel I used

Just an FYI, Honda has changed its coolant, HP, to the same Type 2 coolant as used in their automobiles. It is now blue in color. Previously, it was green. You can purchase the Honda Type 2 coolant at any Honda automobile parts counter, in 1 gallon size, and it's much less expensive than the smaller bottles sold at the motorcycle dealership.

I just picked up this, has no silicates... I prefer full strength.
I make my mix 55-60% antifreeze, that way IF I had to add while on the road all I do is add bottled water and still be in/near the proper mix.

Recent research on coolants. Both my 1200 and 1500 both had the fluorescent colored coolants in them (probably automotive coolant). Both had water pump failures. The Honda motorcycle coolant used to be a dark green color (a lot like lime jell-o). I ordered coolant from a powersport place online, the motorcycle coolant (in quart containers, $8-9 ea) came and it was blue. A bit of research (and a Honda mechanic told me) finds that the very same coolant is available at the Honda automotive dealerships (in gallon containers, $20 ea). As I have seen in long experience with a lot of different machines and vehicles, it is best to use the manufacturer recommended stuff, or at least what they recommend to substitute with. As I found it is a pain to have to change the water pump on either bike, worse on the 1200. I would rather put the correct coolant, than change a pump from silicates prematurely damaging a pump. Just my opinion, and share the info. Happy riding.

I too had to fight the coolant dribbles when refilling the system...Then I noticed the coolant hose going from the filler neck to the radiator had a slight DIP in it...Ah ha!!! Now all I do is with my left hand is lift up slightly on the hose and the coolant flows right in. Isn't it amazing when it takes years to realize or figure out something simple??? I saw my 06 when it was in the box! Ha!
