Mounting a Dash Plaque With 3M Tape

Post by am3098 »

I've had a dash plaque on my 1500 that you see on a lot of bikes for years; The Engraver sells them at the rallies. I upgraded to an 1800 and want to transfer it to the new bike. I was able to get it off the old bike by running fishing line down through the double sided tape and rubbed the residue off with my thumb. I'm not sure what The Engraver used, but I have some 3M automotive molding tape on hand and I'm thinking of mounting it to the left faring pocket lid, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get it off as easy as I did the other stuff. I've seen in different threads where guys are using 3M VHB, is that weatherproof and is it somewhat easy to remove?

VHB is absolutely weatherproof. I had it holding a GPS mount onto my GL1500 dash for more than 5 years, through rain, sun, sleet, it never budged.

It is NOT easy to remove. Your fishing line would likely work, but you're not likely going to be pull it off by hand. It's very strong. But once you have it removed, you can use your fingers to get the tape free.
