steering stabilizer for trike conversion

Post by Cindy »

The Hubby wants to know if anyone thought about adding or did add a steering stabilizer to front forks when converting from bike to trike?

I bought an 1986 GL1200 Aspencade that had been triked in late 90's. My first drive was exciting, especially when coming to a stop at intersection that has heavy truck trafffic. The handlebars just about jerked from my hands-of course, I was hanging onto the grips with everything I had, so I would hate to think what would have happened if I hadn't been hanging on for dear life! Anyway, the drive was exciting and i can't wait for the weekend!!

Hello Cindy,
Sorry to hear about the hair raising experience with your trike.
Most of the time when a bike is converted to a trike the builder will put a set of 'Raked' triple trees on the trike to decrease the amount of effort needed to steer the trike. These trees add from 4.5 to 5.5 degrees of rake to the trike to avoid unpleasant handling conditions, I do have the name of a company that makes them special for the GL1200 trike.

Hey Trike Lady!

HUH? As you can tell, I am a newbie at this! I am guessing the DH will know what you are speaking of. Please send me the name of the company and we will check out if the trike builder did it right.

Thanks

Cindy

Cindy,
Will send you a PM with the name of the company that produces the triple trees for the GL1200.
I've been building trikes for 10 years and I have most of the names of suppliers in my computer.
Have the steering head bearings checked for excess play and fall away.
