Parts N More Product Error

Post by bfvc702 »

I ordered a rear brake caliper rebuild kit for my '83 GL1100. Upon opening it I discovered that the piston seals were too small. In fact, the new seal ODs about matched the old seals ID. I contacted Parts N More and was told that the part number for the kit was what is listed for an '83 GL1100. Their web site did list this kit as being for this year/model, so I did order correctly. They offered a refund, but stated I needed to get a CN22 customs declaration form from the postal service to send with the return so that they would not be assessed tax on the returned item. Also, I would have to pay shipping!

The jist of my rant is that I don't want to expend time and money to return the kit. I just want the right seals. Telling me that the part number is correct does not mean that the contents are correct. Parts N More could check the piston seals specs for this bike and confirm that the seals in the kit aren't correct. It maybe a stretch, but then they could have made things right by sending me the correct seals.

So, I my advises to anyone wanting to buy from them (admittedly they do carry alot of GL parts) consider your chance that the part you order may not be right since they apparently do not confirm specs for their products. Also, consider the hassle factor should you need to send something back for a refund.

Signed,
Abused!

Could someone have upgraded your brake calipers from stock?

Wow...that's the first time I've ever heard anything bad about Partsnmore - I've personally used them for many rebuild kits and never had any problem.

The OD of the rear pistons on the 83 are 32mm. On the 82 they are 30mm. Is it possible the seals they sent are to fit the 82 instead of the 83?

First, I Have been the sole owner of this bike, so no modifications.

Second, the OD of the larger seal sent is 31mm and the small seal OD is 29mm. The ID of both is 25mm. I don't have my manual with me, but I believe the caliper pistons OD was 30+ mm. The OD of the original seals would be 4-6mm greater.

I ordered part # 29-0014 and their web site specifies its for an '83 GL1100I.

What pissed me off is that they seemed to assume that I was wrong and didn't even try to find out what the facts were and correct the error. Also, I have only one more weekend to get the bike ready for Memorial weekend. Guess I'll re-use the old seals!

I actually had the same problem with my '83 Interstate about 6 months ago. It wasn't PartnMore, but I forget where I got the parts. I had the same story. Ordered the correct parts according to their listing, but the seals were too small (although everything else fit correctly). After going back and forth with the dealer, I finally ended up using the seals off of a donor bike which had a nice set of seals in them.
Don't know what to say, but some where, some how, I think a part number is wrong in the Honda parts system.
(I orginally bought the bike in '83 so I know that the brake parts are original).
Be interesting to see if any other '83 owners have had this problem.
Back in the San Jose area for now...

The problem is Honda keep changing parts and part numbers; makes it a nightmare for the dealers to keep up.
Those of you with an '83, order the rear seals for the GL1200 or 1500. You should get the right ones.

Go here to get a piston size chart:

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

( Seriously, you haven't read all 115 pages of my http://www.wingovations.com website ?? )
