Masking large areas for paint

I've seen on a couple of those "Garage" type shows where painters use what appears to be large sheets of masking tape when laying out artwork. What is this stuff called and where can it be purchased?

Local paint stores have different width rolls of paper that sits in a (like a paper towel) roller. Masking tape is auto-loaded onto the paper as you pull the paper out.
Considering the amount your gonna use on one bike, it's not worth it. I used a clean storm window as a table. Laid the paper on it that was cut to size I needed. Then added the masking tape to said edge needed. Tape pealed off cleanly if you didn't press to hard.
BUT... I don't trust regular masking tape, too many bleed-under's. I'll use that cheap masking tape, near where needed, then use Frog (brand) tape to the actual paint edge.
You could start with the Frog tape to define your line then the cheap tape with paper on that. BE SURE to press the cheap tape's wet edge down good.
THEN AGAIN if got a few extra bucks to spend, use rolls of Contact Paper, kitchen shelf stuff. Tho it might prove a little difficult to remove.

I've considered contact paper. The reason I'm wanting paper over plastic is the ability to draw on it to lay out the artwork. It could well be that I'm not seeing what I think I'm seeing when watching it done on TV, like when someone covers a large area and uses a razor to cut out shapes such as laying out flames. I'm wanting to lay out a rather intricate geometric design which would probably be childs play to do with a brush in the hands of an experienced artist and have been practicing with pin stripe brushes, I'm not that guy!

A roll of removable vinyl (like what is used to make stickers or with a circut machine) would work for what you are talking about. Typically they are about 12" wide but you can get bigger or use a circut machine to cut your designs, you can layer them for various colors etc.
If you are buying the vinyl, walmart, most hobby stores or online.

It is called "vinyl mask". I used it in sheets up to 3 feet wide back when I was using CNC machines for woodcarving. Prefinish your wood surface, cover it with vinyl mask, machine the wood right through the mask, spray the paint color(s), then "weed" off the remaining vinyl mask for a razor clean finish. Easy peasy.

It’s called frisket paper. It’s a low tack paper specifically for doing artwork I.e. flames, skulls etc.
