Headset question

Post by smilam »

My wife and I currently ride a 2009 Goldwing and have J&M headsets. My headset is an older model that has the microphone molded directly to the mounting bracket and the speakers are hardwired to the bracket. My wife’s is a 801 series headset and the microphone and speakers are plugged into wires that come off the mounting bracket. At last years WingDing we bought a couple of new HJC I30 helmets. The vendor was out of stock on the color we wanted but they were in shipment. Then they were delayed in customs. We ended up receiving them about three months later. I set them aside until a couple of weeks ago finally got around to moving our headsets from our old helmets to the new I30 helmets. When we bought the helmets it didn’t dawn on me that the slide control for the sun shield was on the lower left edge of the helmet where the mounting bracket for the headsets mounts. I moved the mounting bracket back behind the slide and the microphone is about 1 1/2 to 2 inches short of reaching to the front of my mouth. J&M makes a longer microphone but they said it is about 1 inch longer than the stock microphone and cost $95. I need a whole new headset because I broke a pin and one speaker doesn’t work now. I contacted J&M and they said that to do a custom install on my wife’s helmet and a new 801 headset with a custom install for me it would cost at least $470 plus shipping for both helmets.
I haven’t ruled out going with Bluetooth although I don’t know enough to understand what all it takes and the mounting for the microphone might still be an issue. At WingDing I had a couple of different vendors tell me that it would cost well over $500 to get what I needed. We don’t need top of the line equipment but something that works and is dependable. My wife’s headset only needs to work as an intercom, and be able to listen to the radio and iPod. My headset needs to work as an intercom, and be able to work with the CB, radio and iPod. If it also works with the Garmin and phone would be ok but not necessary.
Has anybody else purchased a HJC I30 and had this problem or have any ideas on a workaround.

Might try Sierra, they may be a source. I've used them before and have been satisfied.
