I adjusted the valves on my 83 interstate a few months back. Runs good, but I just today noticed a small cloud of white smoke coming from the right tail pipe when I fired it up. Like the cloud that you get when it has been on the side stand for a while, except I keep it on the center stand. It also kept smoking a little at idle. I haven't ridden it since I noticed it , because I was changing out the oil filter bolt that had a stripped head on it and lost enough oil in the process that I need to get some in it before I ride.
I have not adjusted the carbs since the valve adjustment. Could either of these be the cause of the smoking?

Re: smoke after valve adjustment
I don't think a valve adjustment will give you any cause for engine smoking.
White smoke can be coolant. How is your coolant level?

coolant was fine last I checked. Right after the post I took a mile or two ride, in spite of a little oil loss on changing the filter bolt. (Oil level was still higher than the half way mark on window). It did not smoke on start up or along the way. It seems it was just after sitting for a day or two.

Did you happen to leave the petcock in the on position?

Re: smoke after valve adjustment
I try to get in the habit of closing it no matter how short a run, but I HAVE left it on over night before. It is possible. Would that make it smoke on start up? Just for interest, I just got back from a trip to the store (a couple of miles) and no smoke.

Re: smoke after valve adjustment
If you leave it in the on position and a float valve happen to leak "doesn't seal" then fuel can get into that cylinder and when you start up it will blow white smoke. If left on and leaking long enough it can cause hydro lock.
