Rivco Sidestand Pad

Post by WingAdmin »

I normally carry a sidestand pad with me in my bike - a plastic disc on a string. When I park on soft ground, or on asphalt on a hot day, I'll throw it down under the sidestand to keep it from sinking into the ground and tipping the bike over. I actually had this happen to me once - I came outside on a very hot day to find my 1984 750 Interceptor taking a nap, having carved a big chunk out of the parking lot.

While visiting my brother a few weeks back, it was a very, very hot day. I parked on his driveway, and without thinking, left my bike there without using my disc (I was hot, and just wanted to get inside to the air conditioning!) I came out hours later, and noticed my GL1500 leaning over at a precarious angle. To my horror, my sidestand had created a giant pit in the middle of his driveway!

The problem is the narrow little foot on our sidestand - it doesn't provide much surface area for our large, heavy bikes:

Image

I decided to do something about it, and that something is this Rivco pad. They make a version for the GL1500, part number GL15013, as well as a GL1800 version, part number GL18013.

Image

The pad is CNC milled from a solid billet of aluminum. The bottom of the pad is smooth and anodized black.

Image

On the side is a set screw that securely fastens it to your existing kickstand.

Image

According to the instructions, some sidestands have molding flashing that needs to be ground off the bottom. Not mine - and likely not yours either, if you've been riding it for any amount of time.

Image

Backing out the set screw, I realized they had put some sealant on it to prevent it from backing out - and I managed to ruin it by pulling it out too far.

Image

No problem, I had some thread locker on hand. I used removable thread locker rather than permanent, in case I needed to remove it in future for any reason.

Image

A little bit of thread locker on the set screw...

Image

...and I screwed it in tight. It works very well, more than doubling the surface area of the sidestand, and obviating the need for a plate. As an added bonus, it lifts the sidestand by about 1/4", making the bike site up slightly straighter. With my Austone Taxi Tire, which is slightly taller than normal tires, this helps greatly to prevent the bike from leaning too far on the sidestand.

Image

I did have a worry about it hitting the bike when retracted, but I needn't have worried. It flips right up and has more than adequate clearance. I was unable to get it to hit the bike. It also does not interfere with my foot on the footpeg, or with shifting.

Image

Overall I'm happy with this accessory - it's a simple, elegant solution to a problem we all have now and then.

now that is good improvement.

my bike came with an aftermarket kickstand with the pad about 3X bigger than normal.

rarely does it ever sink into the asphalt.

I gave this sidestand a good test today. We've had lots of torrential storms this past week, so the ground was not all that hard. I was out at a flea market, and parked my bike for a couple hours out on the grass. When I came back, the sidestand the the Rivco pad on it had made only the very slightest dent in the ground, and had not sunk at all. I give it a thumbs up!

Amazon Canada wants $125 and change for it..... yes, that is correct "One Hundred and Twenty Five Dollars" and change, plus taxes.

Amazon.com is $30

This sounds like a pretty good sidestand add-on for sure. But I'm a bit confused regarding the different applications. I'm thinking that you applied it to your 1500. But everywhere I'm looking, including the Rivco site, it seems to indicate that they're for use on 1800s. Am I missing something here? :? I'm wondering how universal the fit is, as I'd definitely consider one for my '78 GL1000. Maybe you can straighten me out here.

Thanks............Dave

Rivco makes them for the GL1800, which you can get pretty much everywhere: https://www.amazon.com/Rivco-Products-K ... B005U80TLC

They USED to make them for the GL1500 as well, but discontinued them years ago. BUT...

Gary at Cyclemax had them make up a batch of 1500's just for him (he does that kind of thing a lot), so if you want a one of these for the 1500, Cyclemax is the only game in town: https://cyclemax.com/inc/sdetail/1500_s ... _pad/57412

Sorry about that WingAdmin. I read your entire posting regarding the Rivco kickstand pad, but somehow I missed where it said they were available for the 1500 and 1800. I'm kind of disappointed that I can't get one for my GL1000. I think, since I like this addition so much, I'll just have to go out and buy an 1800. Problem solved!

As long as it prints aluminum. :) This thing is CNC milled out of a solid chunk of aluminum. You'd have trouble getting a plastic one strong enough to hold up the bike on soft ground. And 3D printers that print aluminum...well, they cost more than your house. :)

The only real load on that thing is compressive, and there are plenty of 3D print media available that are strong enough to take that and any lateral pressure from the bike rocking. The puck I carry now looks like it's only made of ABS as it is.

True, the little disc I carried was also some kind of plastic, but I would regularly crack and have to replace them. I used to carry an electrical octagon box cover, it worked much better (galvanized steel).

I also have cracked several plastic pucks on soft ground with my GL1800. They are good for a couple of years, but then they give up and crack. They are giveaway items at a lot of large rallies like Americade, so I always carry a spare or two. I tie a string on them, long enough to reach my handlebars, and then can pull them up while getting ready to depart on the bike, without having to endanger the bike by letting it sit on soft surface while putting the puck away. I keep my in use one in the left pocket of the bike.

For any Canadians who would like one of these for their GL1800, amazon.com just put up a less costly supplier of same. Now $39.19 plus $16 shipping in CDN dollars from a company in Arizona called Lytle Racing.

I ordered mine. This is a lot better than the $125 and $185 ones they list from a different supplier.

I tried to put a link in here, but the site kept translating amazon.com to amazon.com. On amazon.com search for GL18013

I just picked one up for my 2018. I can't remember but didn't someone calculate how much more weight/displacement adding a square inch of surface area and/or adding this pad adds to supporting the bike? Of course I'm sure I slaughtered the terminology used to describe how adding this pad helps/prevents the bike stand from sinking in the ground.

Couldn't help but jump in with my $5 "fatkick"...
I had a small piece of steel I cut to shape and took it to a local welding shop and had it welded for free. I used JB weld to finish the welding before painting. Works just great and beats the dickins out of the prices I am reading.
No problems with the kick stand hitting the side when it is retracted for riding either.

You can get them from China for under $12 but lord only knows what the quality is.

For me, I use a Big Foot side stand on both the GL1500 and GL1800. Hasn't failed me yet.

Well, I have had this installed for almost a month now, and have parked on hot pavement, and dirt, and grassy meadow. It does exactly what we all wanted it to do. It does not sink into iffy surfaces. I am very pleased with it, and fully endorse it - if you can get it for the right price. In Canada, I would expect that would be around the $40 mark with the currency differences between us and our southern neighbors. Add shipping, and $60 would be a normal price. I paid $55.18 total.
