5mm Cloth Braided Fuel Hose

Post by Dubdenny »

I thought I'd share info about a product that is applicable to most early non-fuel injected Wing applications that use low pressure fuel pumps and filters (i.e. 16900-371-004) with smaller dia nipples. It's a 5mm ID cloth braided fuel hose sold by a vintage VW parts supplier called www.aircooled.net , see http://vwparts.aircooled.net/5mm-Fuel-H ... 203551.htm for product detail. $9.00 will get you 1 meter, which is only $0.23/inch. It isn't cord reinforced so shouldn't be used for fuel injection applications, but it should be fine for 1976-1986 vintage wings that use smaller lines and low pressure pumps that put out even less pressure than vintage VW beetle pumps (yes, I checked).

Honda's OEM hose for my '81 1100i is a 5.5mm ID selling for a ridiculous $11 for ~9". I just fit checked the 5mm airccoled.net hose and it fits snugly nice on the pump nips. I'll be using Oetiker clamps, just because I'm that kinda guy, belts and suspenders lol.

Ride safe, ride free, ride on!

I put hose exactly like this on my GL1100 to replace the old, bulging rubber hose, and it worked perfectly (and looked great).

Just an FYI about www.aircooled.net shipping costs. Their estimated shipping costs algorithm is rudimentary and not linked to any particular inventory or order package volume, size or net weight. So when you place an order, always put the following note in the "special notes" box on the final order page:
"Please ship the least expensive way, as cost is more important to me than speed of delivery . This is what I was instructed to do when I inquired about shipping costs that seemed out of line with other vendors. I hope this helps.

Hello,
I ordered the hose as recommended from the VW supplier. Mention in the post was made of the OETIKER clamps but there was no link to the proper size/product.

I looked on eBay and would like to know if this is the clamp to use for the 5mm hose. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Oetiker-167000 ... SwB8ZfAETc

Do you know if it needs a special tool to close it?
Thanks,
Mark

The link you provided takes me to an Ebay auction for an ink pen (?).

Yes, you should use an Oetiker clamp pliers for installing these clamps. Having said that, there will undoubtedly be some folks out there that have found other ways to circumvent this (small) expense. But for me, I usually ascribe to the motto "the right tool for the job", so I use the Oetiker pliers.

In any event, the proper size Oetiker product you need is 16700007, 304 SS Stepless Ear Clamp, One Ear, Clamp ID Range 9.6 mm (Closed) - 11.3 mm (Open). They are sometimes also listed on sites by "nominal size" which in this case might read "10.4 mm", which is usually just an avg of the open vs closed ID.

I buy mine at McMaster-Carr but they are also available at other outlets. The McMaster-Carr product has the same specs except the band width is 2mm wider at 7mm (9/32") vs 5mm for the clamps sold elsewhere. The price per piece is also much lower at $0.21/clamp at McMaster-Carr (excluding shipping) vs $1.18/clamp at the Brazilian River bookstore. The only downside to McMaster products is the minimum quantity, which in this case is 25 pieces, but as I have small business fixing motorcycles, I don't mind having inventory. Also, Oetiker clamps are one-use items, so its always good to have spares on hand in case you screw up on an install.

Link to McMaster-Carr item is here https://www.mcmaster.com/5435K12/
Oetiker tech data here https://oetiker.com/en/Products/Clamps- ... PG-117_167

I hesitate to send you the Brazilian River bookstore link because I'm currently boycotting that company due to some derogatory anti-police merchandise that they sell, but given the information provided above the clamps should be easy enough to find if you prefer to patronize that company. Best of luck to you.

Hello, I really appreciate your taking the time to drill into this for me and provide me with links. I will have to see if anyone I know or a mechanic has those Oetiker pliers. If not I will have to go with regular clamps given the cost of the pliers. Don't know what happened with the eBay link I sent but now that you have specified the correct size I can search eBay with that.

It is only in the last few years that corporations and businesses have decided that they have to politicize their products and company. I like you have cut off dealing with companies or local shops who have taken a position in this cultural war instead of just selling their products. Starbucks and Amazon are just a few I won't give money to.

We are facing a crossroads in our country where one path leads back to our founding culture and the other to a control of the country by Marxist Globalist forces. For 50 years they have been methodically taking over culture by indoctrinating generation after generation through the universities, media and Hollywood. Politics is downstream from culture. Control the culture, and political power is yours.

I am waiting for November to see which direction we will go. If Sleepy Joe gets in then all of this lock down stuff will come to an end in a matter of days or weeks. If the president is reelected then I expect blood to flow in the streets. The country has been well conditioned by the media and apologists to accept lawlessness, rioting, and the killing of police as a natural expression of people whose rights have been supposedly infringed upon.

If you haven't already I suggest your looking into Larry Elder and Thomas Sowell on YouTube. These voices have been out there for decades but those that want to maintain control over the population limit their exposure.
May God help our country to survive this. Ride safe,
Mark

If you decide to go with Oetiker clamps, I strongly recommend that you buy the pliers that have both front and side jaws. Granted, its a more expensive tool, but its a one time investment and once you start using these clamps you won't want to go back to other styles (with the possible exception of the beautiful but pricey SS screw types that Randakk's sells, which are very nice, too). They work splendidly and give a very clean professional look to the finished work. They're also kind to the substrate, both plastic, rubber and woven material. If its good enough for BMW and Volvo, its good enough for me. YMMV

Once again, thank you for the additional information on the screw clamps. I will probably go down that road as I have one bike and right now am only replacing the fuel hoses so I can't justify the additional cost of the pliers. I do agree with your philosophy, if it is worth doing it is worth doing perfectly.
I apologize for my previous rant on society.
Best to you and your family,

Sorry, but I'm not aware of a hose off the gate cap vent. I was using from petcock to pump and back. It took a long time to get the hose from that Volkswagen site. Good luck.

Corbin clamps are also a good choice for that application. They provide the same tension as the hose expands and contracts from temperature changes.

Wonder why Metric size fuel and vacuum hoses are such a pain to find? Seems half the cars on the road will be using them too.
