I just installed a Gear Indicator on my 2005. The product was from Aliexpress and cost about $38 with shipping. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32985501776.html
I chose the green color because the neutral indicator in the combination meter display is green. It is very bright. Installation was easy, but I chose to mount it in the console cover and so I added a 3-pin connector. It shows the gear, or new gear, as soon as I let the clutch out. There are round handlebar mounts available, but not for the Goldwing, and the wire would have required more length and careful routing.
The online instructions were a poor translation to English, but the printed instructions were good so I have added them as attachment images.

"Gear position is only shown when clutch is released". Is that the way the item works? Did you find that is a disadvantage?
I believe these types of indicators work not by connecting to the gear position switch, but by measuring the difference between the speedometer and the engine RPM, and deriving the gear ratio from that. So when you have pulled the clutch in, there is no direct correlation between the two, so it can't determine what gear it is in.
I have just installed a gear indicator also. Not wanting to have wires showing, I installed it behind the screen on the right speaker. It works perfectly, and easily readable. I put it on a gl1800 2010.

That is a clever way to install, makes it look very clean and like an original part.
You ain't lost, you're just somewhere you ain't been before.
Just received my gfyship gear indicator and going to install on my 2003 gl1800. I am new owner of a gl, but own a vf1100s for 8 years, and experienced mechanic. Indicator Instructions say connect display green flying lead to ecm wire and plug in 3 way cable into engine speed sensor.
Can you please tell me:
1) Exactly where the ECM is located and what wire color to connect to
2) Location of speed sensor.
I read the shelter needs to be removed. Only had the bike 2 weeks have not removed shelter, I have removed meter panel and seat, so kinda getting to know my way around.
The product I had used a plug that mated with the red diagnostic plug. The instructions didn't say anything about a green wire or ECM, so I don't think I can help with your install question.
I've considered installing this type of shift indicator several times but always decided against it. The reason is, I worried they might damage the ECU since the diagnostic plug is not designed for constant use. Has anyone had an ECU problem that might have been caused by this or am I worried about nothing?
